So I managed to grab a version of the first episode of Hellsing Ultimate. I'm not entirely sure of the differences between the original series and an OVA so I read the Wikipedia entry.

So far, it seems exactly the same storyline as the TV series, with a few costume changes and more intense color/slightly better animation - now onto my question, why don't they just make the OVA for TV airing? If it as close ot the original storyline as the first, why not just take a little more time on the OVA and release it as a mini-series on TV instead of the supposedly 'inferior' TV series version.

I haven't read the manga so don't know how the storyline differs from the TV series but after the first ep. it looks like they've condensed possible the first 2/3 TV episodes into one OVA episode.

Thanks

The OVA isn't being run on TV due to an uncertain episode count and irregular episode times, for one. Episodes are expected to run between 35 and 50 minutes each (as opposed to a standard 25 minutes apiece), and at this point it's completely up in the air as to just how many episodes they intend to use to complete the series. Not to mention producing it as a TV series would mean a more restricted budget, extremely tight deadlines (two things that left the TV series with such spotty and irregular animation itself), and that they wouldn't be able to get away with the sort of violent content they seek to achieve with this series. There's also the fact that they'd catch up with their source material before it finished, which is why the first Hellsing anime went off on its hideous tangent and ended up sucking so badly in the first place. They wouldn't want to repeat history, after all. With the longer OVA deadlines and production schedule, Hirano will likely be finished with the manga by the time the producers need to animate those portions of the series.

The OVA will start to break off from the TV series with the next episode, most likely. After all, it was after the Valentine Brothers' raid that the TV series dumped the Millennium Arc and moved on to all of its mindnumbingly awful Helena and Incognito and made-up Integra's sister crap. The OVA's following the manga's storyline, meaning A) it won't utterly suck like the TV series, and B) it's using the Millennium Arc after the Valentine Brothers incident.

Thanks.

Are OVA's usually licensed for the US/UK Market as well? In other words do you think a second box set of the OVA will be out (when finished), with dubs/subs.....and how likely will it be Freeman is still used as Alucard.

Yes the new OVA are licensed once again by Geneon (Shocking :!) and more then likely I believe that Freeman will probably be Alucard again. I think the DVD will be released as they become available in America, not in one big box set. I mean somewhere down the line (way down) there may be a boxset holding all of the OVA.
Till next time,

I have a stupid question. What does that mean? Catch up with source material?

I am interested because I want to know why the tangent happened, and that is a key sentence, and don't exactly understand it.

-Thanks

Basically what Nagisa is saying is this. The Anime caught up with the Manga, (story wise) and so the anime then made it's own storyline. Most people think that it is very out of place, and a horrible ending for the series. Tangent just means

Irrelevant.
So basically tangent means that the storyline following after the valentine was irrelevant or in this case didn't make sense. Hope this helps
