When I got home from work today, the fast server gave a CloudFlare error message (it seems to be back up now). I know that the fast server is sometimes down when the normal server is working, and that was indeed the case this time. I have my settings set to always redirect to the fast server, but I know that once I type "www.animenewsnetwork.com" three times, it will leave me on the normal server rather than trying to redirect to the fast server. However, rather than giving a CloudFlare message on the fast server, and then having to type "www.animenewsnetwork.com" three times to see if the normal server is working, it would be more convenient if trying to access the fast server would automatically redirect to the normal server when the fast server is down and the normal server is up. Would it be possible to make it do that rather than giving the CloudFlare error message?

Also, I noticed that in my previous post, when I typed "www.animenewsnetwork.com" without quotes, it appeared to me as fast.animenewsnetwork.com, with the "www" changed to "fast", and with the text made into a hyperlink (even though I didn't try to make it a hyperlink). Editing my post to have quotes around the URL seems to have fixed it. Is there any way to make it not change how the text appears without needing quotes? In this case, chaning the text to have "fast" instead or "www" meant that how the text appears wouldn't be correct, as you really need to type the URL with "www" three times to get it to not redirect. Also, just in general, I would like people to see the text I actually wrote, and for me to see the text other people actually wrote. I would still like it to always take me to the fast server when I click on a link that has www instead of fast, but I want to see the text as however it was written. Is there perhaps some option somewhere that would allow it to work that way?

Unfortunately it's not possible for that to happen automatically. Mayu (the server that usually serves "fast.animenewsnetwork.com" was down intermittently for a while yesterday (4 times for less that 5 minutes each time).

When we're aware of a problem on fast and that the problem will last more than a few minutes, we redirect "fast.animenewsnetwork.com" to one of the other servers.

As for the forum changing the host name, that's there for a reason. People sometimes post links to other pages on the site, and they will almost always post using the host they are on. We want those links to work for all visitors to the site without redirecting them to a different server. For example, if you post a link to a page on the encyclopedia using "fast," we don't want a non-subscriber to click that link and get informed that they can't access the page...

I assume you can still bypass the redirect temporarily by using www-d.animenewsnetwork.com?

nope, that will redirect to fast-d, which is also on Mayu.

The -d urls just bypass Cloudflare. If the server is down (as it was in this case), bypassing Cloudflare does nothing for you.

Thanks for the replies.

Having to type the www URL three times when the fast server is down isn't really much of a hassle, and if nothing can be done then it isn't much of an issue.

About changing links to go to the server someone is on, I do agree that it is good to always send people to a server they can access. It makes sense to always have links take people to whichever server they are currently using. However, I would still personally prefer for the visible text to be what was typed. For instance, if I type a link to the fast server, I would prefer the text in my post to appear as having "fast" in it, but if a user who is on the www server clicks on it, they will be taken to the www server. If that isn't possible it isn't a big issue, but it would be my personal preference for how it would work.
