Has anyone seen the movies that were released a while back, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - The Laughing Man (OAV) and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Individual Eleven (OAV)? Are these OAV's the exact same thing as the anime episodes, just turned into a long movie? And if so, is the transition fluid and un-noticable?
I made a post in the retail forum asking if anyone knows any sites I can order these movies from, but I know the retail forum isn't really popular so I would like to ask the same question here. Here is the link to that same post. |

I haven't actually seen them, however I've asked similar questions and been told that basically they just edited down the main plot points into a "movie" like presentation. I'm not sure if they actually created any new footage for these, but I do know they used much of the stuff that was already contained in the series.

I have both movies and they have nothing to do with the series other than the fact that they have the same characters and deal with cyborgs.
The original movie was made in the early to mid 90's and has a slight different style of animation. The story has nothing to do with the OAV but if you find the OAV enjoyable you should see the movie that started. It is worth your time. GITS Innocence is the sequal to the original movie. They mixed hand drawn sequences with some of the most advanced CG we have to date. It is awsome what they did with some of the animation. If you like good artistic work in your anime, this will make you hemerage. The only thing I am not to happy about the second movie, I don't know how other people feel, but spoiler[ the second movie was like GITS meets Dick Tracy. You would have insane technology at points then it would change to technology from like the 1930's and 40's like with the cars.] Other than that objection the overall movie and story was really cool and enjoyable. |

He wasn't talking about the original movies.
It doesn't matter.
I haven’t watched either but I imagine they have just removed the stand alone episodes and hacked together the complex ones to create one flowing narrative. According to the encyclopaedia they include new footage but I wouldn't imagine anything particularly important has been added. They seem to do this kind of thing a lot with anime; personally I don't like the idea. Edit: That's all based on assumption of course. |

It really depends on your tastes. I've seen the original movie and all GiTS: SAC that has been released in US anyway. The second movie I haven't yet seen. I thought the original movie was excellent, and although for it's time, the animation style was top notch, it definitately feels dated now. Also keep in mind that although the movie has some great action sequences, they are spread out and pacing is slow for an action movie, so it feels more like a drama. Overall, I would say that Stand Alone Complex might be more appealing to most people, and much more enjoyable from the beginning. So bottom line, if you feel like your hardcore enough and really want to see where the series came from, watch the first movie, then the series, but you really won't loose much if you just jump into the series since the stories take place in an 'alternate' universe anyway. I'd think one would enjoy the series more now anyway, you can always go back and watch the movies later. |

Neither of the compilations have a R1 release yet, however the first log book has been released with the second log book commming out soon. These log books cover the first season of GIS and include even more inerviews. The books themselves are really nice and are limited if I remember correctly.

I know they don't have an R1 release and that is why I asked if anyone knows any sites with the Japanese releases that are legit and can ship these two compilations over seas. I know a couple of sites I can get the two compilations from, but I know for a fact that they will be bootleg versions.

Ghost in the Shell: SAC The Laughing Man Ghost in the Shell: SAC Individual Eleven Both available on Play-Asia, a very reputable site that I've ordered from in the past, and definitely no bootlegs. |

Thanks a lot [b]patch. Unfortunatly, thats too rich for my blood. I was only willing to go up to $40 for each, but then again it's not like I've ever ordered anything from over-seas. I remember RightStuf having a Christmas sale for the whole first season of SAC and that was about the same price as one of these volumes... in other words I'll just wait and hope for these movies to get a R1 release or wait for another sale for the whole series. Thank you though. |
