i just finished watching all episodes of Robotech the macross series. i have to admit first of i only picked it up because it was extremely cheap, and secondly i had heard some good things.

the series to me i found amusing and very entertaining. it was like watching "lost in space" with added humour. the humour i don’t think was intentional, but made me laugh just because it was so retro. the things the characters were wearing and the things they would say are very 80's.

i didn’t think it was particularly well drawn but that should not get in the way of the story at all. i did think it had a good enjoyable story, which was ultimately entertaining and amusing.

so over all i believe i found a bit of a bargain £10 for 26 episodes, u cant go wrong really. so yea final i thought it was worthy of the rank very good. it is very dated and retro however i do not believe this gets in the way and makes the series any less good. of anything it made it more enjoyable and entertaining.

so what did you think for those of you who have had the pleasure???

thank you Very Happy

I'm sorry but the low price was the only good thing. I hated it. It was really boring.

I watched the show while I was growing up. At the time I thought OMG! THIS IS AMAZING! What could be more amazing than F14 Tomcats that transform into robots that go out and fight in space?

I remember I was in New York and they showed it right after GIJoe on channel 11 (about 20 years ago). It was the first time I saw a cartoon where people died, unlike GIJoe where people ran among dozens of tanks which fired a million rocket missiles at each other and nobody ever had even a scratch on them. 2 sad scenes come to my mind when I recall that series. The first one was when spoiler[Ben dies because he couldn't keep up with Rick and Max ], the other one was when the Zentraedi spoiler[ bombed the heck out of the Earth and an unknown soldier tries to cover a little girl on a play ground from the blast but they both end up roasted anyway. ]

I saw it again a few years ago and I still think it was a great show, even though the animation is so bad it almost feels like you are watching South Park. I liked it in spite of Min Mei.

I give it one thumb up.

I have the Robotech Protoculture Collection. I only watched the first disk which was the Macross Saga. It is an awesome show and is very retro. It really brings back memories of watching cartoons and anime when I was younger. I haven't gotten around to watching the rest yet.

My biggest gripe about the show is the artwork and animation. The overall look of the show looks very crappy by todays standards, and it's hard to go back to that kind of animation after you have been spoiled by todays animation for so long. It doesn't ruin the show, but I'm always thinking how much cooler the show could have been with up-to-date animation and artwork.

I personally think the show could use a remake. But overall it is still an awesome show from what I have seen.

I've always loved the show. The Robotech version of Macross is definitely not as good as the unedited, original, Japanese version though. Minmei comes off far better, the music is better, and the voice over is gone (which I always hated) in the Japanese version.

As for the animation-- of course it isn't as fluid as current stuff, but for 80's animation, there's a great deal of the show that's very good (there are, of course, the very badly animated, cost-saving episodes as well). The dog fights are very good too, IMO. I find the show on par, in general, with other stuff like Gundam or Maison Ikkoku, or KOR. And there are lots of other 90's shows with lots of stills (Berserk or NGE, for example). I've always liked the character designs in Macross, the sketchy lines during some scenes, that sort of stuff. There's still, in important scenes, a real attention to detail.

As for the plot-- I think it's great. Perhaps it's because I'm 30, and therefore older and not able to objectively judge things from the 80's, but I far more buy the characters in Macross than in a host of other mecha shows depicting war that have aired since.

I dunno-- I love Macross, I think it's fun, and actually engaging as a show with real merit, versus just being a throwback. Sure, it's got some cheesy music, but it's actually got some good music too (in the Japanese version). Sure, it's got bad animation, but it's also got some very good animation (by 80's standards) with interesting detail. It's got great character designs, and an attitude about war that doesn't back off from the nasty bits (particularly for civilians). Plus, in the end, it's got a central romantic relationship that I buy. Smile

Indeed, Steve has hit the mark on this one. There is a real strong nolstagic connection with me and this series so it is hard for me to be objctive. The first time I saw it was before Robotech was released, so I was really angry at Harmony Gold at the time.
Mikimoto was my favorite character designer throughout the 80s. He really is a natural evolution from Yas, and Matsumoto who were also always my favorites back then. I really love what he did to the Macross 1984 feature. I used to watch that film (it was one of only a handful of video tapes I owned back then) weekly. The BGM is also amazing.

I have seen Robotech: The Macross Saga and I loved it. It is easily the best of the 3 Robotech story arcs. It had a terrific story and compelling characters. Now I know how many of you out there despise Carl Macek for what he did to Macross, but you have to realize that there was no anime market back in the 80s. Be thankful that he left in everything that made Macross great, specifically the various love relationships between characters. And the death. And how bout all those slow scenes, like in the episode "A Rainy Night," in which Lisa and Claudia spend a whole episode talking about their lovers? Most anime back then had that stuff eliminated. I commend Macek for leaving all that in and enabling Macross to break open a whole generation of anime fans.

And now, it's even better watching ADV's new release of Macross. From what I've seen so far, they have done an outstanding job. The dub is amazing. But the new 5.1 surround is even better. Every time the Macross blows up a squadron of Zentradi battle pods, the explosions make the whole room shake. ADV has once again outdone themselves with one of the greatest anime series of all time.

If you are a true anime fan, you will buy Macross (the original series, not Robotech). I guarantee you will love it. It's more than just giant robots in space.

Throughout the late 80 and 90s Carl Macek would go to all the conventions and man the Streamline Pictures booth. After chatting with him after a few years, I learned that he is a nice guy, who really likes anime. We laughted about the Robotech movie together, and talked about Shurato for a good part of an hour when it came out. We would both dream of Gundam comming too the US, and talk about Macross. Believe me, I have nothing against that man.
The new ADV Macross has a ton of neat extras. I love the translator interviews, as well as the audio commentary. The 5.1 seems to lack direction, and can't compete with the modern Japanese/English 5.1 mixes on Stand Alone Complex, Champloo, or Gungrave. For the most part it pipes the dialogue through the center and music through the sides as expected. I wish the originals tracks were completely remixed like they did for Eva or Bandai's Bebop. Instead it reminds me of thier 5.1 English "conversions" from the 2.0 like on Chrono Crusade, or Peace Maker.

You can have the helmet.

I'll take the Veritech.

(That's right...the Veritech - not the Valkyrie Twisted Evil )
