Just a broad spectrum question for all you Gundam Fans: has anyone seen a store selling Gundam SEED Destiny? If so, give your opinion on the series so far (NO SPOILERS).

If you are looking for english dub then i haven't seen any stores selling them and i have never saw any place that sell the japanese version.
In my opinion i like Gundam Seed Destiny series over the first Gundam Seed series, more action and new characters too. |

Gundam Seed Destiny Box Set retails for $39.99. I can see the compartments you're talking about. Looks pretty cool. According to AoD, Gundam Seed Destiny is scheduled for 12 DVDs. I personally believe it will be 10, but then again I don't work for Bandai Ent.
Here's Anime News Network's Page On Volume 1 With Box. This link also has prices from various stores. I wonder if any moderators have come across this topic yet... |

That sucks. I heard Gundam Seed Destiny compared to a slow train wreck many times in this forum. Hope true fans enjoy the whole series more than they did regular Seed. I hope the retail price for wach volume doesn't rise.

Train wreck, well that was Zack i think in his column. Actualy i have noticed it was a big let down for true fans, if i gave you the reasons you will notice them and you might not enjoy them. Trust me its an amazing series and the soundtrack is like one of the best. And i am sure any body will really enjoy it. Its just like a soap opera (really). So if you like soap operas really do buy it.

You wanted an opinion.
Just making it clear that you asked for this, and that I am simply granting your request. Gundam SEED Destiny is...the WORST Gundam series I have ever seen in my life. Mind you, I have also just so happened to have seen every Gundam series out there, barring the generally well-received Victory and the not-so-well received (but still given more praise than Destiny) ZZ. So it's not like I'm making some sweeping statement without any actual means of backing it up. Been there, done that, and this was the worst to come out of it. And it's not just that it was a disappointment. Oh, was it ever a disappointment, especially given how good I felt SEED was. BUT it was also atrociously written. Unless you believe cheap pandering to the lowest common denominator of fans and sacrificing a coherent plot to do so is a good way to tell a story, I don't think there's any way you could ever say this was a good show with a straight face and mean it. The plot is blatantly changed several times. And it's obvious. Numerous sideplots and supporting characters' stories are started, and then either dropped without explanation or changed based on fan popularity polls at the time or other trivial means (this model kit isn't selling!). The intended main cast is swapped out halfway through for almost all returning SEED characters purely because the producers weren't patient enough (or competent enough in writing the show) to give the new guys, Shinn, Lunamaria, etc. a chance to grow on the fans. Not to mention the good guys are exceedingly overpowered through most of the show; there's barely any point in the series where the protagonists actually struggle; they simply plow through every enemy in their way almost without fail, which becomes especially frustrating with spoiler[the most one-sided and anticlimactic ending in recent anime history.] Not to mention the series not only blatantly rips off other Gundam titles (Destiny's spoiler[Destroy Gundam] is truly nothing but Zeta's spoiler[Psyco Gundam] with a backpack), but it rips off the series that came directly before it! I kid you not, Destiny rips off plot points from SEED. There are several points in this series, where you're basically watching SEED all over again with different characters and mobile suits. Oh, and going back to the portrayal of characters for a minute, there are several times in this series where characters will blatantly change personalities without explanation. Again, I kid you not, characters will suddenly develop near-opposite personas purely because it's convenient for the show or because it panders to fan polls. Heck, they even warp many of the returning characters' personalities. You want to see Cagalli with her trademark fiery temper? You want to see sweetly humbled Kira? Too bad. They spoiler[took Cagalli's spine and made Kira preachy and self-righteous.] And as a closing note, the animation was a step down from SEED, too. Stock footage use was not only increased between SEED and this series, but it was clumsily used, too. There are literally scenes where they use Strike Gundam stock footage for Impulse, and don't paint it up to look like Impulse. Impulse turns into Strike for a shot! And that's just one example. Characters are also frequently drawn disfigured and off-model, and the show generally looks choppier than shows twice its age. And these are just the basics. I could go on for another whole post about the retardation of character arcs and the lack or utter inconsistency in lead protagonists' character conflicts. Or of the mindnumbingly poor pacing of the plot. Or the excessive use of flashback and recap episodes that jarringly disrupts the flow of the story. Or of the introduction (or blatant advertising through multiple publications of introducing) useless plot items that either materialized and didn't mean jack, or were supposed to mean something and never appeared at all. Oh, and there are the allegations of director Fukuda & head writer Morosawa bickering with the other staff and voice cast and forcing plot changes as a means of "punishing" people they were at odds with (most prominently Naomi Shindoh and Kenichi Suzumura, the voices of Cagalli and Shinn respectively). But I think I'll spare you for now. |

But isn't it also true that no matter how horrible a show is, fanboys will still rank this one of the best gundams ever? Not only that but recommend it to other people. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of mindless anime fans out there who don't look beyond the Gundam battles, thus saying this is a great series and that people should check it out.... look at the second post. Hahaha, I'd like to see Bandai put a sticker of this quote on their next Gundam Seed Destiny volume. |
