I noticed this while watching Fafnet DVD #3 with Japanese audio/English subtitle.
Didn't any translators caught the German numerics on Fafner units while translating? They got most of the numbers right but I heard "fünf" in half Japanese/half German but read "Hguc" on English subtitle. I also heard another number, I think 12 which is "Zwolf" in German but read something else on one of the earlier DVD. These mistakes show lack of attention to details and care from Geneon Animation. I love their shows but the quality of packaging, ie lack of extra materials, to none existance on English credit for actor names to characters is very shoddy compaired to ADV and Funimation. I hope it gets better on future releases. |

Fafner is one of my favorite series ever. I didn't catch any of those details probably because I was 100% immersed in the story. It was such a cool story...

Perhaps you are being a little overly critical. Mis translateing numbers in not a major failure, or even a sign of poor workmanship. Just human error. We have to allow for such things. Even multi million dollar pictures have goofs in them.
For instance I read your post a few times, and I found a number of gramatical errors. Yeah my writeing stinks aswell. My point being can we seriously hold anybody else to a flawless standard? I commend you on finding a mis translation, but I have seen much worse in anime. In some of the good companies you mentioned infact. I personally see your point as a minor goof, and not one that seriously impacted the product. I also cannot see it as a blemish on the company. I have only watched the first Fafner DVD, but from what I saw it was a highly polished product. I am all for ripping of shoddy workmanship as you put it, but is this really shoddy workmanship or the standard minor slip. Take for example the first harry potter movie. In one scene the kids walk in to a room and the door closes behind them, at the bottom you can see the feet of the extra closeing the door. You could say it was shoddy workmanship that the extra did not stay out of camera, or that the scene was done slapdash. You could say the editor was lazy or the director was inexcuseable. You could say the pre screening audience failed miserably. You could say all these things. They are not true though it was just a minor lapse, and had no real impact on the products quality. You had to be really deep into details to spot this watch subtitles and speak german. This is kind of like calling george lucas an abject failure, because he left the old cartoon animation of the deathstar run in episode 4 in the special edition. I think when watching any media from any company we have to make some allowances for minor imperfections. |

i guess i was overly critical in condemming Geneon...
what really bugged me was that the mistake was not caught for 3 discs....mistake was caught on the fourth disc.... yeah...what DOES suck about Geneon IS that no equal treatment for English credit and VERY minimal extra... I thought for such a popular title like Gankutsuou, it would have some kind of extra like booklet or pencil board or commentary but for first DVD there was none.... these days I would not count previews and clean opening/closing as extra as people expect them now these days as normal feature..... |

But as far as other extras like pencil boards, commentary, and other stuff, it really depends I guess. ROD TV had commentaries and cells, all from the nice folk at Geneon. Does then mean that Gankutsuou got the shaft? It depends? Are you buying it for the series or the stuff that's in it? Extras is just that, extra stuff. It'll be nice to have, but it won't make the show any better or wrost. |

I do not blame you for being disappointed over extras not adding up to much, but the reality is in no matter the genre alot of DVD manufactureres are not even bothering.
This means its often left up to the director to put some good stuff together for the fans. That means haveing a documentary crew on hand, and so forth. At one time DVD extras might have been a selling point. It really dosent seem that way anymore. Not only that but when whoever is in charge decides this dvd can use extras its usually the tired old things. Anyway its not just limited to one company or one genre. About the only genre that comes out mildly ahead is science fiction. Where it seems its required, and even then they try to squirrel out of decent extras sometimes with 10 minute docs. |
