I'm looking for new manga to pick up and currently I'm just awaiting Battle Royale Vol.15 (Hopefully the last), and I picked up Monster Vol.1 and plan to pick up the rest.
But anyways, I've seen most of the FMA anime, so I'm wondering is the manga is atleast a little different, and more mature, than the anime. I've heard of minor changes in the story line, but is the manga ending good? Is it the same? The encyclopedia has 12 Japanese volumes, but is that how many will be released by Viz? |

The anime follows the first few volumes fairly close. But I hear there are some major differences after volume 6 or so.
It's also still being written. I think it's at a little more than two thirds it's planned length. |

the manga is TOTALLY different. it starts off the same, but after the arc with Greed, they're in no way similar at all.

So is it different for better, or for worst? So it's still being made in Japan? Any word on how many volumes? Is it almost finished?

The manga follows the anime very closely until the 5th manga. Then large changes can be noticed, and from my understanding, the anime and manga become even more different as they continue.
I'm not sure how many volumes there are in all but in America, the 6th volume is about to be released. I like them both, the art work is a little different but it's still well drawn, and the storyline is still good. |

whether you think it's good or not depends on your preference. the manga is based more towards action than drama. there's new characters that weren't in the anime, like Lin from the east continent. also a lot of plot elements are also changed. for example:spoiler[in the manga Scar Kills Shou Tucker and Nina, Greed wasn't killed by Ed, and the main villian is someone called the "The Father"] there's some other big plot changes, but i don't wanna spoil it too much.
i personally like it so far. it's still running in japan, and there's supposed to be about 4 or 5 more volumes. |

Remember Trigun? They started the Trigun anime while Yasuhiro Nightow was still doing the manga and it was yet to be finished. This doesn't happen very often unless the manga series goes a really long time like say Bleach or Naruto.
But with Trigun, they only had a 26 episode series. So, they basically had to use Nightow's manga as the framework and make some changes so it would be one complete story. Nightow himself is still yet to finish the Trigun manga. With Fullmetal Alchemist it was a similar situation. The creators saw the manga on the shelves, loved it, and decided to make an anime off of it. But, manga creator Hiromu Arakawa was still doing it and had a plan of about 101 chapters (its currently on like chapter 56/57 in Japan). But for the anime, they had to make it 51 episodes. Now from the start, the anime isn't 100% the same. There are some differences and the sequence of events is rather different (ie, in the manga, the events of episode 5 take place after Ed became a state alchemist). Basically, the anime and manga divulge from similar events and plotline after about episode 23 of the anime. From then on they are totally different, only the characters and basic plot (Ed and Al searching for a way to restore their bodies) remains the same. This has caused some controversy among fans. The hardcore otaku manga purists HATE the anime and the changes they made from the manga. They don't like how dark and serious it becomes and at times unsettling. They don't like that its more ambiguous and shadier. They have problems with the story editors making changes from their sacred artist, Arakawa. Personally, I prefer the anime, but you can't really judge them as a complete body of work since the manga is still yet to finish. Manga fans have this perception that the manga will have a better ending than the anime is, even though its yet to happen and is not all said and done. |

Actually, it happens quite a bit more than one might think (and more than I personally think it should). A fair number of the CLAMP anime were made before the manga was done (X/1999, Chobits, Tokyo Babylon, Tsubasa, XXXHolic). So yeah, from my experience I would say it happens quite a bit, that anime is made before the manga is finished, and in some cases the manga isn't that long (to go back to CLAMP, Tokyo Babylon is 7 volumes, while Chobits is 8). |

I'm sure I can, I'm just saying that it's far from a rarity for an anime to be made based off an unfinished manga. |

well, i have only read the manga, and haven't seen the anime, so i dont know whatt he differences are. but it is a very good manga, and i love it, but i only have the first 29 chapters.
still, this is a very good manga, and i see myself laughing alot while reading. |
