I've been wondering lately, is there any anime out there that might be something like "Ocean's Eleven" or "The Italian Job"? A thief type anime...nifty gadgets, "cool" characters and well thought out scenarios, etc. I've never heard of anything that might fall into this category.
Well...King of Bandit Jing is it? That's the only thing I've heard of that might resemble what I'm looking for, but I don't know a whole lot about that so I guess I'll look into that one atleast.

Lupin III is all you need. There are three TV series, the second of which has been airing on Adult Swim for years, several movies, and there's been an annual TV special for at least the last 15 years. If you don't mind the age (the first series started airing in Japan in 1971), then Lupin III is exactly what you're looking for.

I'm pretty surprised that you've never heard of Lupin the Third. Pretty much James Bond with a sense of humor and on the wrong side of the law. He doesn't have much in the way of gadgets, especially since it was originally made in the 70's. I don't know how the latest movies are though since I haven't seen any of them. There's also Saint Tail which is more shoujo in style.

Sorry sorry, I do know of Lupin. To be honest, it was all right. Kind of funny, kind of neat, little on the old side, but ok. I've seen like..10 or 20 episodes on AS when I used to watch it around two years ago. It was never as smart or serious as I wanted though. My fault for forgetting that one.

Some thief-type anime usually are in science fiction shows, like Kiddy Grade, Dirty Pair, and Cowboy Bebop.
As already mentioned, the Lupin series is your best bet.

You could always look at Mouse. Sure, it's not very good, but it's a theif anime none-the-less.

The reason there aren't any thief like shows is because they are generally made in live-action cinema. Truth is they are a lot better
in live-action cinema as well. Anime generally consists of shows that have things that cannot be portrayed through live-action, so a simple thief movie isn't very common.

I've watched enough to know that most anime are things that are very well suited to animation. I still wanted to know if there were any ones I had over looked though, apparently not many. As movies go, a smart one like Ocean's Eleven is one of my favorites. Guess I'll have to stick with those and those alone then.

No reason to give up yet dude, you've only had a few replies.
What about DNAngel, if I'm correct the plot centers stealing of some sort.

Seen it =P And nah...I read a review one time which summed up the change in DN Angel pretty nicely. "Don't watch the first 2 episodes and expect the rest of the series to remotely resemble them." While the premise is the main character's a thief, it is very much down played most of the time while the romance is taken up a notch. Slight drama and romance I'd say are the main themes here =P But thanks for trying.

Cat's Eye is about three sisters who steal art objects, quite old, but still fun.
And the... fourth Detective Conan OVA is about Kaitou KID, a gentleman-thief. Done quite well, gives you a Arsène Lupin feeling while watching it. Too bad it's so short. (Kaitou KID is from the manga Magic Kaito, a earlier series of the creator of Detective Conan)

Like some other posters, DN Angel was the first thing that popped into my mind before I even read the thread...for the first third of the series, it does feel kind of like one of those "thief" movies where you root for the criminal to outwit law enforcement and steal things. Imo, the romance, action, and comedy are enough to make watching the rest of the show worthwhile.
Maybe also Gokudo, a medieval fantasy anime with a relatively amoral main character who doesn't exactly care for love, justice, and all that noble stuff. (Lina Inverse, the main character of Slayers, is somewhat similar.) It's been awhile since I've seen it, but much like Slayers, the main chracter of Gokudo is willing to steal/lie to meet his goals.
You could also try Sherlock Hound--although it doesn't have the main character as a thief, it does have Dr. Moriarity, who comes up with numerous plans to steal valuable objects.

While it's not 'theif' anime, Licensed by Royalty sounds like it's right up your alley. It's a definte James bond type anime. Tons of cool gadgets and secret agent stuff. It's pretty much about two guys who work to for the government of some country to protect it. It definitely has it's interesting moments, but it took me a long time to get into it. However, by the end I can say I enjoyed it.

I do not know anything about this series, but I have heard if you want something in the same vein of "theif" or "caper" anime then you can't go wrong with Saint Tail.

There's also Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne. It's mainly a magical girl anime, but the main character is known as a thief who steals art. I personally really like the series and while it's classic "magic girl", it's an interesting premise.
You may also want to check out Saint Tail, once again it's a magical girl anime. The main character in this one though is more like a "Robin Hood-esque" type thief.
