Who is your favorite Magical Girl?
For me, they are: 1) Sailor Moon - This was the first anime I ever watched so for me, she will always be my favorite. When I was watching it, it was at the end of Sailor Moon R (English dub) so I really didn't notice that Usagi whined alot. But when I was able to watch it from the beginning, I did notice but I also noticed that as the series progressed the whining slowed down and Usagi matured. Actually, one of the things I'm jealous about, is Usagi's greatest ability...to make friends easily and to love everyone no matter their faults. And of course the romance that was involved. Gotta luv the love! 2) Sakura Kinomoto - This was the 2nd magical girl that I met. Loved the anime from the get go (even though it was the butchered English version). Even though she was younger than Usagi, I still like the way she tried her very best. I could relate to how she feels about scary things (even at 37 yrs. old, I STILL do not like to be scared). Here too was someone who grew into her powers, made friends easily and had the support of said friends and family (even though most of the family really knew what she was up to). I also liked the family relationship development that was done. Sakura's father was great, if I had broken my mother's laptop when I was 10, I'd STILL be screamed at today. I also want to have Toya as an older brother (I'm an only child, which sucks swamp water!), even though he teased her alot, he was always there for her and to protect her. I don't think that Usagi's family was developed as well, but Usagi's family didn't play such a main part to the story. I also enjoyed the "romance" in this story. Since the main characters are just children, real "romance" couldn't be done like in Sailor Moon, but still it was fun watching Shaoron realize who he loved. And I wanted to shake Sakura to make her "wake up and smell the coffee!" 3) Himeno of Pretear - Loved the story! Himeno's hard luck with family, loudness, and willingness to try struck a cord with me. Really haven't figured out why it is called a retelling of Snow White, since Himeno's step-mother never tried to kill her, etc. But was really enjoyable nonetheless. In doing this, I've realized that I only have 4 Magical Girl series (I'm including Magic Knight Rayearth in this, I think they count.) So I'm hoping to see what others come up with to tempt me to buy. Last edited by LydiaDianne on Mon Feb 27, 2006 1:59 pm; edited 2 times in total |

Sakura, because everyone loves her. Those who don't are just heartless cold-blooded animals
She's kind, funny, sweet, and is 10 years old. She's always happy and never annoying. Everyone in the anime series love her, so we should too Last edited by Stupidman007 on Mon Feb 27, 2006 11:20 pm; edited 1 time in total |

My favorite magical girl would have to be Magical Nurse Witch Komugi from Nurse Witch Komugi. NWK is one of my favorite animes. But keep in mind that unlike most other magical girl animes, Komugi is actually aimed at adult males. It has a quite a bit of fanservice and some slight nudity. One of the best and funniest parody animes IMO though. Next would come Sakura Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura. Don't think I need to explain that as most people know her here. I don't really have a third favorite but I guess I'll just go with Nanoha from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. I haven't seen the sequel yet but I've seen the first season and thought it was pretty good. The anime surprised me in a lot of aspects and went beyond my expectations. I do plan to watch the sequel. I'd recommend it to magical girl fans regardless of age or sex.

Nanoha by far is my favorite magical girl.
She's intelligent, determined, charismatic, and capable. It helps that I absolutely love the way the anime is set up. It takes a lot of the cliches or at least, the standard magical girl reasons, and makes them make sense. The fight scenes are gorgeous -- and this really shines in the second season -- but they're also tactically appealing. Nanoha *thinks* on her feet and sets up plans and then coordinates with her allies. I especially love the transition from s1 to s2. Heck, the girl even *practices* daily with her powers -- and without the standard big bad new enemy appears to spur a bunch of training that miraculously leads to new power levels. The best part? That training is then later applied to a new attack that takes advantage of all that control she built up. I wouldn't want to be on the opposite side of the Nanoha and Raging Heart duo. They literally do *not* bluff; if Nanoha says she'll make you listen, you're *going* to end up listening. If you haven't watched MGLN nor its sequel, I highly recommend the series. Personally, I loved the second season, "silly" ending or not (enjoy the explosions -- it only IMO shows just how -scary- Nanoha can become when she puts her mind to doing so). Edit: If you've never heard German speaking weapons, you're missing out. |

[EDIT]
Locked, but then unlocked upon further review on the condition that LydiaDianne can go back and edit/insert a comment or two for her choices of Sailor Moon and Sakura Kinomoto. Remember everyone, put a reason. It doesn't have to be a big paragraph. Just a few sentences of your own opinion (preferably with some character analysis or something). Thanks! |

Wow, I didn't know Tony had the power of the little padlock... *makes a note to be careful*
I don't know if she counts as a Magical Girl, but Tokiha Mai from Mai Hime is perhaps my favorite overall character. Of course, the shounen character design is more appealing to me from a fanservice perspective, but her character differs from most magical girls out there--she's not a whiny crybaby like Usagi from Sailor Moon or an endlessly optimistic "I will definitely be all right!" girl like Sakura from CCS. Nothing against either of those two, as I've got plenty of love for them, but Mai deals with her powers/destiny with believable, mixed emotions. She has a few breakdowns, but shows a resolute attitude when it comes to protecting her brother, defending the other people she loves, and spoiler[preventing the HiMEs from fighting in episode 17 and afterwards.] I know she's not a Magical Girl in the traditional sense, but I think the combination of shounen action hero traits and magical girl transformations/powers works pretty well. |

Yay, nya! Komugi-chan is the best. The anime is really funny and Komugi is just the cutest character design. |

Tony hasn't posted in over a week and he usually posts at least every other day. I'm guessing he's spent the last week or so training deep in the mountains of India in order for this new power of his to awaken. The power to lock threads.
I'm guessing I should say something else, so here is a Galaxy Angel Sailor Moon Parody poster. It comes from one episode where they find a lost technology in the form of a magical wand that is able use real magic and can only be activated by chanting a spell from the bottom of your heart. Apparently many wars were started over the wand. spoiler[It turns out that the wand isn't able to use magic though and they end up making fools out of themselves cosplaying as magical girls and singing. Volcott also does this but fortunetly he's not in the picture I put. The wand takes an embarrassing picture of them during their performance, but the picture is then taken away for investigation on the lost technology. In an effort to save themselves from humiliation the angels rush off in their angel frames in order to get the pictures. Fights break out trying to get it back, apparently this was the cause of the wars...] Also, here's a picture of Mii from Popotan in her Magical Girl Lilo costume. |

Galaxy Angel huh? I knew posting this thread was a good idea but I think getting involved with this forum was a mistake ( ) I think I'm going to have to get a part-time job to supply my anime habit. *<big sigh>*

Galaxy Angel isn't a magical girl anime. Neither is Popotan (at least not the typical kind). I was just refering to one episode of Galaxy Angel that pardies the magical girl genre. Galaxy Angel is a comedy/parody anime and Popotan is, um, I guess I'd call it a drama... kind of... with some comedy.

I'd like to bring up two magical girls who aren't mentioned as often anymore: Juna and Utena.
First off, Juna from Chikyuu Shoujo Arjuna is hands-down my favorite character in anything EVER, and she's all the more great because she defies so many of the magic girl conventions. She's relatively soft-spoken (with a kansai accent, on top of that) and lacks the "perkiness" normally attributed to most magical girls. Also, although she does have a transformation and a magical weapon (barely used after the first two episodes), most of her "power" is actually the ability to learn and sympathize with those around her. It is this wisdom that is her true power, and which leads to her final recognition that spoiler[everything on the planet is connected with one another, and therefore she and Raaja are the same. It goes back to the very first dialogue you hear at the beginning of the first episode: "The target and you are one and the same." This realization, of course, saves Japan--both its people and the environment.] Utena from Shoujo Kakumei Utena is almost the polar opposite of Juna. Where Juna is quiet, hesitant, and thoughtful, Utena is loud, brash, and outspoken. It is her strong sense of justice that draws me to her character. I also like her tomboyishness. It's the same quality that draws me to someone like Oscar in The Rose of Versailles (an allusion that was no doubt intentional). She has a (comparatively) husky, powerful voice that commands the screen and she is practically indestructible. I appreciate the fact that it's a woman in shining armor that saves the princess at the end, instead of a man. But the best part is her character isn't TOO over-the-top tomboy as well. She doesn't fit into the whole "Oh, I only like pretty girls and hate all men" cliche spoiler[and even has a sexual relationship with Akio near the end; her actions in this arc are incredibly feminine.] So, yeah. Go Utena! |

My favorite is Nanoha's scythe mage with a traumatic past, Fate Testarossa. In all honesty what makes the show so great is that it is full of awsome Magical Girls who take the unsual path (for the genre) of tough love. The mesage may be love and friendship but the mode of its delivery is usually a brutal ass beating.
Mai-Otome has tons of awsome characters too (they have transformation sequences, good enough to qualify) more specifically Nina who even after a lot of softening up is still rather obsessive about her feelings for her adopted father and lets it lead down a sad misguided path. |
