Of course, there was the double whammy of Sanae Furukawa's bread, spread with Akiko (out of Kanon) Minase's jam...
Although Kiviak and Hongeohoe have the (dis)advantage in that they are both very real so a good choice, although Surströmming should have bene worth a mention too. |

I would totally eat Orihime's cooking. I'm brave (or perhaps foolhardy) enough!
Also, though it originated in a video game first and is more a 'deadly' cuisine rather than strange - Persona 4's 'Mystery Food X'. That is all. |

Ya know I had this myself. When I worked at a local Chinese carryout the owners were actually Vietnamese. I was the only non-Vietnamese in the kitchen. Go me. Well after morning prep during the lunch time the wife of the owner and the one chef would make traditional Vietnamese dishes for lunch. Always some sort of meat, some sort of veggie, and generally a simple soup with a lot of steam rice. I love trying new foods and happen to love more traditional Asian foods. So I almost always ate with them what they had. I got points with them for doing that too heh. One day the wife of the owner brought in this fermented salted dish. She told me it was pork to get me to try it. It was actually fish. It had a very strong pungent odor to it and a strong up front taste. However it was actually quite good. I had 2 servings of it with some of the sauce over steamed rice. She also made stuffed buns with weird fillings that to this day I still don't know what most were. Regardless they were pretty damn good whatever they were. As for the question this week having just watched Children Who Chase Lost Voices I have to say 5 Centimeters Per Second is still my favorite so far. |

You got one of the names all messed up. It's Sanae Furukawa, not Sasane Furukara. You did later correct the Furukara part, but you continually called her Sasane throughout.
Poor Sanae, she even got some bread that was a double whammy by adding the infamous jam from Kanon. I can't help but wonder just what that jam was made of to make it so incredibly inedible that it would instantly wake up and terrify the normally half asleep and spacey Nayuki. |

Yay for Nyarko-san's cooking showing up, it was the first thing I thought of when I saw this list. The odd thing about her dishes is they actually taste perfectly fine, really good even, despite the horrid ingredients in them, and they didn't seem to have any bad side effects (at least when only a little was eaten). Still not sure I'd trust them enough to actually eat one of them myself though.
I also thought of Elsie from The World God Only Knows, as she made weird food with ingredients from hell itself. Kind of sad it didn't make it on the list, though there are always too many choices to include everything. (Plus I suspect Lynzee may have not seen the show). Which reminds me that somehow I didn't think of Elsie for the last list about demons you wouldn't exorcise. She would have been a good choice there too. Overlooked twice, I feel bad for her... 
Definitely don't dispute choice number 1. The fact that those are real foods is kind of terrifying. Someone in the Anime Quote game thread recently referenced the fermented bird one, and I got to read Professor Itsuki's explanation of how to eat it... eergg. Hm....Kinda surprised Bianchi's (From Reborn!) Poison Cooking isn't on here.... that's the number 1 killer right there.
Also Mori's cooking from the Law of Ueki...looks gross, but absolutely delicious...

That paste is the really salty one, right? I may be thinking of the one made with dried, fermented shrimp, which is delicious. My experience in some ways, was similar to yours. I had a friend who had lived in Taiwan. Spoke both Mandarin and Cantonese. He wanted to cook some of the foods he was used to eating there, so he found the one, tiny asian grocery we had in town and took me there. The family that ran the place was Laotian, and the patriarch was very surprised to see two Scandinavian looking people entering his store. Even more surprised that one of them spoke nearly fluent, accent-less Chinese. They were talking, and I just stood there looking around in amazement. The owner seemed really happy that we were in his store and eventually offered us some of the soup the family was having for dinner. Squid and Winter Melon. Mine had an eyeball floating in it. I looked at it and it looked back. My friend informed me that that was a "choice" part. I ate it. Surprisingly good! (also, surprisingly crunchy!). After that, i wanted to try different things. The family who owned the shop were great. They would translate recipes for me and send me home with bags of ingredients. This is how I spent my money when I was a teen. It eventually lead to me attending chef school (though I don't work as a chef anymore). I have a lifelong love affair with bitter melon and fermented things. Today, I'm usually the only blond, northern european -looking person eating the chicken feet in the dim sum places. LOL. |

Regarding Moyashimon you write:

None of the descriptions of this dish that I have ever read mentioned dung. And I go out of my way to track down information on unusual foods. The only thing I could find on the web was some guy ranting against Korean food being filthy. |
