Figured I'd make a thread on this.

Unfortunately, this series never seems to get much recognition, despite being--without a doubt--my personal favourite. Check out Chris' reviews on AnimeOnDVD.

Oddly it's a bit hard to call it a "mech" series. Really, at it's heart, it's a drama that focuses more on the plot and characters (and not in the way of something like Evangelion).

Took about 6 years to finish the 7-episode OVA, too.

Very underrated show.

I'd call it more a Japanese Supers/JLA(J?) show than mecha. Since the Experts of Justice are just like one of those SuperHero organizations.

The new DVDs are a steal, too. $21.99 at Best Buy, has original Japanese dub, 2 English dub tracks (Older and newer, both with surprisingly differing dialogue), remastered video (I assume, it looks damn good).

It's really one of those things any anime fan should check out. A classic.

Coincidentally, anyone seen the OVA about Ginrei? And is it any good.

I've seen the DVDs as cheap as $10 on Best Buy's site.

The Ginrei OVAs are...interesting. Mainly just a self-parody with a lot of fanservice and weird humour.

AKA: absolutely nothing like the OVA.

I fed the film print into the projector during it's world premiere at Animecon in early 1991. It wasn't released on video in Japan for a whole year later. After the convention was over we had the film print for another couple of weeks efore we had to send it back to Japan, so we watched it a dozen times during the summer! I also managed to have lunch with director Imagawa and Makoto Kobashi after showing the film print of GR3 at Anime Expo 1994. Mr. Imagawa was a really nice guy who talked about Gundam and Star Trek with us. When I had him sign my Aura Battler Dunbine Laser Discs (which creates a three volme panorama) he saw Tomino's signature (from Expo 92) and said "Tomino-san is my teacher and friend." What a nice guy!

I agree, this is a fantastic anime classic and is very underrated. It has wonderful animation and a beautiful score, as well as deep and excellent characters and a great story. It needs more acknowledgement. I really want the Premium Eyeball DVD box set.

Ah! I saw the Monster Eye set at Suncoast. It includes all three DVDs, the Ginrei OVA, and an extras disc. Too bad it doesn't include the soundtrack.

As for the soundtrack, it's an absolutely beautiful orchestral score done by the Poland Warsaw Philharmonic orchestra. Especially excellent when you consider most anime at the time was all synth music.

Suncoast? I'd rather buy it online, most offline places charge the ever hideous retail price for anime. On a slightly off topic note, the Suncoast I've always visited is closing down. It blows, I was really hoping for a big anime sale, but none of it was on sale. ><

Synch? That's strange to think. Most or all I've heard sound like real orchestration.

Some pieces of music in other Anime and such use certian parts of an orchestra, and is later pieced together with synthezised music. However as it's generally cheaper to have one guy with a keyboard than it is to get a conductor and instrument players, most is synthesized.

Suncoast is overpriced, but around these parts the only places to get anime are Suncaost and Best Buy.

As for the music, most of the early-90s stuff was more bubblegum-y Jpop.

I do, however, find it quite funny that Masamichi Amano did the music for a certain other, rather..."interesting" anime series just a few years earlier. I'll leave it up in the air.

All of Giant Robo's soundstrack was recorded by the Warsaw Philarmonic Orchestra.

The soundtracks are a real treat!
