I've seen some pretty weird concepts for anime but this one takes the cake. The Japanese should take comfort that what's been happening in the Middle East lately, isn't going to happen in America. I doubt we'll be seeing Americans attacking the Japanese embassy or burning the Japanese flag over this.

Hahaha! Japan, you're so amusing.

(EDIT: Ok. Let's not get into that)

Hm, I wonder if they might be willing to risk a digital-only English release. Though there are probably a fair number of tech-savvy among the easily-offended these days...

Actually - as has been discussed before - the main reason nobody wants to license this is because it's a gag comic about everyday Japanese life (as seen through the eyes of two divine outsiders) and contains a lot of humor that Americans wouldn't get. Plus, not everyone is familiar enough with the biographies of Jesus and especially the Buddha to understand every reference they throw in.

In short, they'd have to have lots of notes explaining the jokes, and when you have to explain the joke, it's not funny anymore.

That said, it's like comedy porn to a religious studies major like me. This reminds me that I really need to buy it while I'm here in Japan...

I really enjoy this manga - love Buddha's personality, especially how he responds to Jesus' birthday. I also think it's mildly amusing that these two religious figures share a low rent apartment in Tokyo. You'd think that these two important characters would live someone a bit more posh.

Sad that this manga, and also the movie, will likely never be licensed in the US. But then, if people got all bent out of shape over an old Taco Bell kids meal promotion that offered Card Captor Sakura's Clow Book (it's promoting paganism, after all!), I could easily see these same people getting upset over Jesus and Buddha not only living together in Japan, but being friends.

Christians, but Catholics are lampooned all the time in anime and manga, so I cant see any big deal with this. You only have to look to December release of A Certain Magical Index. Catholics are flat out villains, torturing and killing even other Christians without blinking an eye. Even the Anglicans who are the perceived "good guys" are questionable. Blue Exorcist is another one that comes to mind. In fact I cant really think of an anime or manga, where there is a church shown in a positive light.

I read a few chapters of this and it was less offensive than I'd expected. Pretty funny, too. I don't think any harm was meant by it.

Still, shouldn't Muhammad be at least a supporting character?

Do that, and protestors in Southeast Asia and the Middle East will called for "death to Japan, America's lapdog", and called for manga and anime to be burned, Japanese embassies to be vandalize or get death threats, and extremists will called for "jihad" aganst Japan. I prefer they don't put Muhammad in the manga, we already seen what happened when Muhammad is portrayed.

That was sort of my plan, to be honest. Afterwards, I will rule over the ashes.

Under no circumstances does that make it right. Catholics won't burn down Japanese embassies, so that makes it OK for them to be your go-to villains? To insult their beliefs? To mock their faith? Look I'm sorry Garth Ennis, but just because Catholic religious leaders won't put a hit out on you doesn't make it right to mock them. Because if you keep pushing them, they will push back. Isolating this type of garbage to Japan where there are virtually no Christians is fine, ignorance of culture, I get that. Publishing it in the US because "Oh those wacky religious morons"? Yeah, how would people feel if it was a manga mocking Judaism or Hinduism? That wouldn't go over very well.

Now that I've gotten that rant out of my system, Saint Young Men isn't really offensive, at least not outside of the shell shock of its concept. The worst it does to Buddha is make him a bit of a Tsundere and the worst it does to Jesus is the running gag about his fear of water. It's a fairly funny, down to Earth comedy about exactly that, two people who are lauded being down to Earth and hanging out, and the jokes about the humanization of these figures do work. The problem is that the core concept can be easily viewed as offensive to the point where the original work will be dismissed completely, even when the humor is more light ribbing than an aesthetic author tract.

I wouldn't say their portrayal in Blue Exorcist is too negative. They are the ones protecting humanity from demons after all. The only other thing that pops into my head is Kids on the Slope. Two of the three main characters are Catholic and it's treated rather nonchalantly.

Honestly, I don't think there'd be much of a problem releasing it here. The people who protest against these kinds of things are a very vocal minority who probably would have no idea what anime/manga is or how to find it. Most people don't have a problem with these kinds of things as long as they're not mean spirited or offensive. I'd really like to read this now and show it to some of my religion teachers to see what their reactions would be. I can think of at least one that would probably find it hilarious and the others would probably just dismiss it as one of those "crazy Japanese" things.

Please tell me the theme to The Odd Couple will be the opening song.

"On November 13, Jesus of Nazareth was asked to remove himself from his place at the Father's side. That request came from the Father. Deep down, He knew He was right. He also knew one day He would return to Him. With no place else to go, He appeared at the home of his friend, Siddhattha Gotama. Several years earlier, Yaśodharā threw him out, requesting that he never return. Can two pillars of religion share an apartment without driving each other crazy?"

That's perfect! I'd love to see that as the intro to the movie. Or an AMV made with its footage.

20th Century Boys. Full stop. To the point that I started wondering if Urasawa had converted.

Kids on the Slope had two very religious (Catholic) characters, and it was just a part of their character.

(nvm, my screen stopped loading under your comment, so I answered, but I see SereneChaos already mentioned this)
