Recently I bought the thinpak collection of Evangelion Platinum, I noticed that the 7th DVD has some directors cut episodes. My question is, to finish watching everything of this series do I need to buy the other two dvds I've seen out there,Evangelion 'Death & Rebirth' and Evangelion 'End of Evangelion', or do I already have the content of those DVD's in the platinum collection?. As you can see I'm kinda of a noob with all this so I appreciate your help. thanks in advance!!

Death and Rebirth and End of Eva are an alternative ending, these where created because the ending of the series was so contraversial, I wont go into details because I dont know if you have seen it or not. But you can get away without the movies.

When I got the perfect collection of Eva about two years ago, I didn't, truthfully, bother getting "Death and Rebirth," I rented it before I saw the anime, and it's just a big review of the show, I don't think you have to have it in your collection

However, I highly suggest getting the End of Evangelion so you can see a much better and understandable/complicated ending of the series than what Gainax was made to do for the series because of a low animation budget. The movie makes up for the utterly confusing last (two or one? I can't remember) episodes.

The platinum box set only contains some of the director's cut episodes. You will have to buy the two DVDs containing them to see all the episodes. The two movies are worth watching. They are an alternate ending to the show. A bunch of fans were pissed off because the ending to the show was so contraversial and they wanted a more conclusive ending. So through death threats and a large amount of people wanting a better ending Hideaki Anno came up with the movies. Though the movies answered many questions they also created new questions.

Death and Rebirth - It is divided into two parts. The first part is a recap of the show and the second part is just the begining of the second movie. This movie isn't something that you have to watch, but I suggest you do because it explores each of the characters and shows a more expressive side to the series. Also it has a commentary track if you buy the DVD.

The End of Evangelion - This is a must see. It is the alternate ending to the show and is two episodes, though it does have the running time of a normal movie. If you liked Eva you need to watch this.

I bought the End of Eva and D&R pack that Manga released after ADV finished Platinum. . .it's a decent buy, but either way, End of Evangelion is pretty much required viewing. Yes, for whatever reasons, they did 25 & 26 the way they did, and fan outcry eventually led to the making of the movie. Personally, I had no problems with TV 25-26, and I had no problems with the movie. . .it's very fitting for Evangelion to have those two weird alternatives.

And btw, it's *controversy*, not *contraversy"

Not quite correct. Plat contains all of the Director's Cut eps. Although the Director's Cut DVDs contain eps 21-26, only 21-24 contain new footage.

Actually the last two episodes do infact contain more footage. They only add up to a couple seconds, however there is new footage such as a ton of pen pens in one shot. Also I own the Platinum series and it does not contain all the director's cut episodes. It has four out of the six.

Ok, I'll put it this way.. ADV released six episodes on the director's cut dvds. 4 episodes 21-24 were Director's Cut episodes from Renewal of Evangelion. 25-26 were not Director's Cut episodes from Renewal of Evangelion, although they may contain a few seconds of extra animation. The Platinum set contains the 4 Renewal of Evangelion Director's Cut episodes.

I would sujest getting the series and watching it. It would probly be to your benifit, both as an anime fan and money wise, to get a box set style of the series. The 2 movies that show the different endings would also be to your benfit to obtain, too bad they don't all come in one package (to my knowlage).

If you are woundering about the package it's self, I'm sorry i cant realy coment on that because I haven't bought it. I watched the show on AS. Although it is an exclent show the replay of it isn't that great, in my oppinon.

as i stated above if you do belive that you would like to rewatch this show, go with a box set ( im not sure if that is what the " Platinum" case is), but all in all It would be cheaper, if only by a few dollars.

Actually, the only difference between the original versions of those episodes and the "director's cuts" on ADV's DC release was a framing choice during one particular scene in episode 25.

This is a bit off-topic for this thread, but I've heard a rumor, which I have not been able to verify, that Anno's original intent was to make what EoE eventually became. Did Anno originally intend to do make the EoE ending, but couldn't because of a lack of money to end the series in such a grand fashion?

Well, in terms of story intent, I'm not sure if he originally intended Eva to end like EoE, but yeah, there were some financial problems toward the last few eps, hence the "unfinished" feel. Also, because there were only a few episodes left, Anno could not afford to focus on the side characters, and that is why the last 2 episodes focus almost entirely on the epiphany(sp?) of Shinji.

Yeah, about that...

I just finished the Evangelion series(where have I been? good question) and I have some questions. Rather than create a new thread, I just thought I'd piggyback on this one.

Okay, here we go.

I think I understand the basic idea of the last two episodes.
The instrumentality project had been completed, and every character in the show was stripped of their ego borders, like Shinji in episode 20. What followed was a psychadelic mishmash of psychological profiles of each character.
My questions are:
Why did the focus suddenly shift to Shinji alone? How did he change reality to that wierd sitcom scenario? Why was the climax of the series when Shinji basically said "I'm me and that's okay"? Why did the cast (including his dead mother) congratulate Shinji?
Am I better off watching End of Evangelion than figuring out this nutty ending?

Thanks in advance.
