Sure, that might seem plausible, if they didn't just dedicate an entire episode towards making a new sword

That's my question: why devote spoiler[an entire episode to making a new sword in one eppie and then (seemingly) ignore it in the next?]

In MMOs swords may have different stats which may be better for different situations. At least in my characters I used to have at least a couple of swords. For example, one may be stronger and slower, but the other can give you more speed. Considering how he talked about the weight, his new one is probably dedicated for heavy damaging blows, rather than use it in a duel where speed is more efficient.

he wasn't doing anything that required spoiler[dual-wielding].

They dedicated the episode towards filling his harem. The sword was just a McGuffin. Anyway, I doubt he'd throw away his black sword unless he sheds that part of his personality. He'll probably level up and dual wield them both to become even more broken. |

Plus new sword kind of ruins his black swordsman look. He has an image to uphold.

If I remember correctly episode 7 with Liz is chronologically later than episode 8. But in the anime it's confusing indeed.
Explanation in the novel (possible spoiler): spoiler[he wanted a second sword so that he could use his special attack Dual Blades.] |

that might be true, if Liz, Silcia,or Yolko were to return and have any impact in the story, but they apparently wont and dont |

Well, apparently everything except the first and the latest episodes up to this point has been side stories. It means none of those are likely to have much impact on the main storyline. Maybe the sword will have a major role later on, but i find it unlikely. |

According to the times given at the beginnings of episodes, episode 8 took place approximately 4 months after episode 7. (I don't remember the precise dates, but episode 7 was in June 2024 and episode 8 was in October 2024.) |

Ok, so when I saw the beginning of episode 8, I was like "Yes! Thank you!" Lol. There was also some nice character development during the spoiler[cooking scene]. Kirito and Asuna actually talked about spoiler[how being in this game for such a long period of time was affecting them psychologically.] I was elated. I was almost feeling touched by their conversation (not gropey touching... more on that later). This episode started very very well for me. OK, so the spoiler[cooking set up] was very cliche. Yes, it did create another somewhat insidious subtext of Asuna beingspoiler[ the good woman cooking for her love interest man], just as she is supposed to in a society which is mildly anti-feminist. HOWEVER, I was able to get past that subtext because the "rare" meal they shared together had a genuine intimacy to it which perhaps could only be experienced by a lonely male and female who have been locked up in a virtual world for the last two years and have not really allowed themselves to be happy with another person. There were touches of budding romance which I didn't feel was too cheap. I give the writing an A- to that point.
I agree. As I said above, this episode was a massive improvement for me on the whole. There were some issues, but, I was happy to see Kirito and Asuna bonding and talking about their mental condition and enjoying each other's company. It was also nice to see Asuna showing a bit of skill with her weapons.
spoiler[I was thinking this exact same thing, lol. As I was watching, I was half expecting someone to suddenly rush up behind them and shove them in then have the door shut behind them.]
This nearly killed it for me. The episode recovered after, but I was not expecting that at ALL. Asuna comes through teleporter, and I was just thinking they were about to get on with their journey. Thenspoiler[ we are suddenly forced to watch Kirito groping what appears to be her boobs and her butt for like several seconds while she blushes. Then there is the obligatory "girl becoming enraged by letch 'accidentally' groping her and knocking him across the room/yard/sky/ocean etc.. with a super punch."] I was like, are you serious??? Then to follow that whole spoiler[grope/super punch scene with Asuna running behind Kirito to hide like some scared child while her big (and apparently weak) bad-man comes and tries to drag her back home.] I was like, oh no... no no no... and shaking my head. Now, like I said earlier, that NEARLY killed it for me, but I have to admit that even though the set up for the duel was silly, the actual fight was somewhat entertaining and created a nice sense of drama. Also, I did feel Asuna recovered somewhat by showing strength after and telling her guardian off. It was unfortunate it had to only come after Kiritospoiler[ 'protected her,'] but I won't harp on that point for right now. Moving along, the last part of the episode was fun. I liked seeing Kirito and Asuna working together in a dungeon again. The final scene also created some nice suspense. Overall I am happy with the direction this episode is moving in, but I really really hope we don't get much more of the mindless fan service. Fun fan service can be great in appropriate works, but most of the fan service so far in SAO has been, at best, awkward and unnecessary. |

Episode 8 was generally good but it had faults mainly to do with the bipolar portrayal of Asuna; spoiler[one minute kick-ass female then next minute "hiding" behind Kirito from a slight obsessive but not that scary escort. At the end of the episode; back to kick-ass female.]
spoiler[Fanservice] scene not needed. spoiler[Romantic] scene cliché and awkward but liked the "psuedo-psychological" discussion. Ending was quite nice. I really wasn't too bother about him not using spoiler[the new sword] and if he doesn't use it or just the once in the rest of the episodes, it won't bother me too much cause I already consider that episode kinda pointless anyway. |

The fact that every girl the introverted protagonist comes across falls madly in love with him? So far we've had the shy girl, the loli imouto, the genki girl and the tsun, it smells like a harem to me regardless of whether they are happening concurrently. Though I can concede on all the other points, it's ultimately a fool's errand to nitpick the internal logic of an anime with real world thinking. |
