I kinda figured that if they were going to cast non-Japanese actors, their roles would be renamed. I wouldn't be surprised if only Akira remained unchanged both in name and ethnicity.

I like Paul Dano, but the biker kids should really be high school aged.

I love how that video's title keeps pushing the date back.

God forbid they make an Akira movie that takes place in Japan with perhaps some Japanese-American actors.
Like... uh... George Takei. As Kaneda. Bit old for the role (by about a century), but hey, it's George Takei.
"Kaneda, Tetsuo has transformed into a nigh-invincible god being!"
"OH MY."

Not even interested anymore. I'm already disappointed. People WILL watch a movie with a lead that isn't white you know!

The movie will be good or bad, the race of the actors has very little to do with that.
Only problem I see so far is this: thematically Akira is very much tied to a post war Japan. Will this be able to capture such themes without that. That's what I want to see.

The movie doesn't have to be an award-winner. If it finds a way to take itself and its premise/themes seriously without relying only on action and high-budget screen development... I will be satisfied.
They can change the names. Change the story. Change the setting. Change the nationalities. Change anything they want... and if it turns out to be a good movie that is at least relevant to the original's premise (no, a premise is not a beginning plot background--that's called the "setting." A "premise" is the major theme and how the idea carries out that theme)... then it will carry with it an interest in the common people (or maybe just those who take note of it) for the original work. And it will give a good name to the source.

oh wait, it didn't because the names have been changed because this movie is just a bad, bad idea all around
and the prom is TOMORROW!
