Actually, Noriyuki Abe is on there twice. So is Ryutaru Nakamura.

Any chance of linking the director's name to his Encyclopedia entry? I know there are some directors whose work I really like, but whose names I can't remember for jack, so it'd be nice to be able to browse on the spot some of their work so that I and others aren't simply stuck voting for the only five or so anime directors with any real instant name recognition (Miyazaki, Oshii, Kon, Tomino, etc.).

That would be nice - I spent about fifteen minutes checking through my favourites list to make sure I wasn't missing a beat. I wound up voting for Satoshi Kon, but I did so only after careful consideration. Close runners-up were Tomokazu Tokoro, Kenichi Kasai, Mamoru Oshii and of course Hayao Miyazaki. Missing name: Osamu Kobayashi. I'd still have voted for Kon over Kobayashi, but his name ought to be on there. Of course, realistically, this poll is about second place following Miyazaki. - abunai |

I'm happy to see that Mitsuo Fukuda is NOT on the list.

I was trying to put together all the links with their directors, but I have to go now. Maybe somebody else can finish it? Or maybe I'll finish it once I get back. Hayao Miyazaki Shinichiro Watanabe Hideaki Anno Satoshi Kon Yoshiyuki Tomino Mamoru Oshii Akitaro Daichi Makoto Shinkai Katsuhiro Otomo Tomokazu Tokoro Mahiro Maeda Masayuki Kojima Noriyuki Abe Isao Takahata Kazuhiro Furuhashi Kazuki Akane Osamu Tezuka Ryutaro Nakamura Tetsuya Nomura Toshiyuki Kato Goro Taniguchi Hiroshi Nishikiori Kazuto Nakazawa Kazuya Tsurumaki Kenichi Kasai Koichi Chigira Koji Masunari Masahiko Otsuka Naohito Takahashi Shinji Aramaki Tsuneo Kobayashi Yoshiaki Iwasaki Hiroshi Nagahama Keizou Kusakawa Koji Morimoto Mamoru Kanbe Morio Asaka Morita Hiroyuki Naoyasu Hanyu Noburo Ishiguro Noriyuki Abe Ryutaro Nakamura Satoshi Nishimura Shinji Takamatsu Shouji Saeki Takashi Ikehata Takeshi Ando Yasuchika Nagaoka Yasuhiro Takemoto Yoshifumi Kondou [There ya go -t] |

Maybe I underestimated the Evangelion fans, but I seriously thought Kon would get more votes than Anno. Granted, the poll isn't over yet, but I doubt the results will change much.

Yeah, it would've been nice if the names were linked to the Encyclopedia. It's just not easy for most English-speakers to remember Japanese phoenetic names. And worse, the names are laid out in Western style which makes it difficult searching. (Rather a lot like laying out a long list of names Western style -- you have to sort through all the common given names.) That and the list has spots where names are not alphabetically listed.
This makes me wonder how Japanese remember names. I bet there's a facinating neurological study in there on how a society remembers names with such heavy use of common phoenetic patterns. Maybe it's a mixture of visual and auditory memory? |

Alright, i haven't been on ANN for a while, so i want to verify something
on the "favorite director" poll i see two "Noriyuki Abe"'s and i double checked to see if coincidentaly there are two directors of the name noriyuki abe, and saw that there was none then when i came to vote i wanted to vote for "Yoshiyuki Abe" and he wasn't there... a mix-up? EDIT: whoops,. i meant yoshitoshi abe, and nevermind, he's a script writer, character designer.. |

What? Only 7 votes for Koji Morimoto? I didn't expect him to do spectacularly, but only 7? I guess I'll go sit in a corner now, with the 6 other Morimoto fans.
I'll blame it on his work being an acquired taste. Yeah, that's it! That has to be it! (sigh...) At least I have you, Morimoto avatar! |

Also, isn't Rintaro a pretty important name to be missing from the list? He's not my favorite, but he's directed some pretty important films (Galaxy Express, anyone?)
And I can't believe a website that works on a magazine called Protoculture Addicts could forget about Shoji Kawamori! For shame. |

And now that I think about it, Yoshiaki Kawajiri is missing, too.

Oww, it really sucks that you can vote for only one person. :/ Now I have to choose between Shinichiro Watanabe, Mahiro Maeda, Kazuki Akane (who directed Escaflowne, probably my all-time favorite anime) and Noburo Ishiguro who deserves a vote for LoGH. :/ Gah. I think I'll just decide with throwing a coin.

current result summary:
My vote definitely goes to the master, Shinichiro Watanabe, but someone who just recently popped on to my radar for his most recent work is Osamu Kobayashi for his work on BECK as Director, Scenario, Storyboard, Episode Director, Character Design, Series Composition |

Besides Rintaro and Kawajiri, there are some other essential directors that have been forgotten.
Hiroyuki Imaishi Takashi Nakamura Osamu Dezaki The least you can say is that these directors are some kind of excentrics with very individual style, while some others on the list are "craftsmen" that merely deliver studio-commissioned products. |
