from some tweets I was following on the matheson case his wall-paper was from the TV series k-on that warranted the whole search in the first place and ended up getting him detained.
I actually find this whole mess a huge waste of tax-payers money and amongst other things a slap in face for the criminal law/ justice system was set up for in the first place. Last edited by Cecilthedarkknight_234 on Sun Jul 15, 2012 10:17 am; edited 1 time in total |

I have to wonder what sort of training entails some customs official into looking at objectionable porn. Does he/she have to endure hours of watching porn to determine what is obscene? Is it via personal preference? Do you get hazard pay?

FBI, police and CIA agents get to legally look at Child porn to know what it is by definition. It's also considered be evidence in criminal cases so when they indict some one from having x amount of images or videos then they have to know the actual amount to charge the person with according to the DA in your area.. Putting my legal class aside for now yeah they actually do have to watch to find out what's obscene and what's not, and I'm sure they get plenty of physc care from looking at those images. |

So has the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund ever had a case with an actual comic book instead of manga? Seems like it's only really manga that gets in trouble. Assuming there's American equivalents of loli manga... or K-ON apparently if that's what got him in trouble...can't imagine their reaction if they saw a Papakiki or Kodomo no Jikan wallpaper.

Lost Girls is probably the most well known one. There are others of smaller, indie type. See Oklahoma v. Planet Comics (Eros comix; e.g. The Devil's Angel) and Florida v. Mike Diana (Diana's own comics)
Georgia v. Gordon Lee Oklahoma v. Planet Comics Florida v. Mike Diana Illinois v. Correa They also provide advise, counsel, etc. such as a list of comics to be aware of that is known to be illegal in Canada. Also, it's not just CBLDF, media coalition is also involved, though not solely dedicated to comics/manga. They provided the brief for the Oregon case where Berserk was cited as an example |

Whole different country, whole different set of laws/regulations. Canada will not allow American law enforcement to obtain felons that flee to their country if they are being charged with a capital punishment offense. The amount of legal work that Mateson would have do is mind staggering and honestly not worth it in end. I'll just flat out say this, if you are going to canada or another foreign country that has a low tolerance for anime/manga then I suggest changing your wall-paper, not lugging 14 different electronics in the open and keep the hobby on the down low until you pass through the border. These are the times we live in and like it or not this is what we have to do as anime/manga/visual novel fans if we want to go abroad. Until some gets half brain and realizes it's a CARTOON and FICTION with no actual people being hurt or involved then we can move on pass this waste of tax-payers money. |

Should the CBLDF try to explain this to our president Barack Obama or to Elizabeth Smart (the kidnapping victim who was the main inspiration of the 2003 PROTECT Act) or to former president George W. Bush (who signed the Act into law)?
