I'm thinking about purchasing the movie trilogy and I'm wondering if I will be told the whole 0079 story or just a select scenes? Are these good stand alone movies? Would I be lost considering I havn't seen the whole series? I heard the new Gundam Seed movie trilogy is horrible becasue it's difficult to follow or understand whats going on without having seen the original series. I heard the 0079 trilogy has different content than the series and focuses more on Newtypes but is this added footage or just rewritten dialogue?

I guess what I'm asking is what is the difference between the series and the movie trilogy? For better or for worst?

The Movie Trilogy is the 'canon' story of Gundam 0079: you can't go wrong into watching this one instead of any others... Cool

Basically, the differences concern added footages and revisited designs: all these changes make the overall story more complete and the visuals more modern and less 'experimental' than in the original TV series... See, the TV series had bad audience records when it was broadcasted into Japan back in 79, therefore the last episodes which were supposed to give to the show all its appeal were finally canceled. Basically, the story was amputated of its 'substantifique moelle'

The toys and models lines, on the other hand, had a great success. This allowed producers to make the movie trilogy with the revisited designs and story arcs mentioned above: actually, and despite the fact that the movie trilogy is shorter in time than the TV series, it is still more 'complete' than the original

Oh and the Movie Trilogy available as R1 DVDs is subbed too... Razz

Not that the dub was terrible or anything (TV series dub I mean). But I have heard some things about the old movie dubs, like how they call the beam sabers "laser swords" and calling Char "Sha" (the Japanese pronunciation). And somehow, I can't see Steve Blum playing Char. I think Bandai should've given the DVDs the same dub as the series, however, given Gundam's non-existant popularity in the US, it probably wasn't worth redubbing 3 movies from the 80s.

It would be unfair to compare the 0079 trilogy with the Seed movies. The First Gundam films stand alone very well and are very coherent to those who have never seen Gundam. I prefer them over the series since most of the scenes that are missing involve silly side stories, goofy MA, and a ton of battles. The Gundam Seed film kept far too many battle scenes at the sacrifice of both plot and character. Seed also suffers from entire (important) scenes missing or told in flashback montages. The Gundam Trilogy films also are all over 2 hours, while the Seed films barely hit an hour and a half. There is a ton of new footage in the original trilogy, with the cool scenes with the Core Booster, and the Guncannon replacing the Guntank in film 3. The animation for the new scenes are much better compared to the tv footage. I had problems figuring out what the new scenes in the Seed films were. The Orignal Gundam films have also been superbly remixed in 5.1 surround. This is one of my favorite surround mixes with very distinct sounds comming from very isolated channels. The Seed films are only stereo for some reason. I would highly recommend the Original Gundam Trilogy which, like the Blue Gender film, is a film that pulls elements and scenes from the series to add to a new framework, instead of just editing them down to fit a given time frame.
