Anime is the Japanese's shortened term for animation, like how Pokemon is the Japanese's shortened term for Pocket Monster. The Japanese consider anything from Looney Tunes to Evangelion to be anime, so anime is animation.

Yes, that's the Japanese definition for anime, but in the US, anime refers to animation specifically made in Japan

But since the Japanese are the ones who coined the word, wouldn't the defintion of the people who made the word logically be more correct?

I think it's taken on its own meaning as it has come over here. Now, in English, it refers to all 'Japanese animation'.

If that was the case, then a great many people from a great many countries (and many different languages), would be speaking gibberish to each other everyday.

This is OT but funny:
My 4-yo nephew only thinks something is a cartoon if it has the CN at the bottom left of the screen. So if it's on PBS or Disney Channel it's not a cartoon. I find that funny.

Here is a good example by one3rd on why it refers to Japanese animation and not just animation in general.

hmm... do american series like Batman or ninja mutant ninja turtles have ongoing stories?

Not all anime have ongoing stories, like movies don't have ongoing stories, because, well its a movie.

In the end, ther'es no real set-in-stone definition of the word "anime". It means whatever you want it to mean.

Thinking in the terms of a word that aquired its own meaning opposite to its roots "anime" can mean any type of animation which carries "the japanese spirit". So for example if something is just animated there, but with the story being 100% written, directed and produced by an, lets say, American, you couldn`t really call it anime.
This is my definition. Feel free to disagree.

According to the Japanese definition, he is correct.
