Your favorite anime, which no one else probably knows about?

I have found that typically my favourite shows from other genres have come from asking this question, so now that I have recently started watching anime. I thought I would propose this question and see what comes to light. Thanks Wink .

Being new to anime in general I have not yet had the opportunity to delve into the more obscure series, but a series which I enjoyed very much was Chobits. Which I believe is not extremely well know. (But I could be wrong about that Very Happy )

Hey, welcome to the forum.

Just to let you know, when a poster starts a new topic, they are expected to get the ball rolling by posting their opinion and/or thoughts on the topic. If they don't, the thread usually gets locked. You might want to read the rules of this forum.

On the subject of the topic, all my top favorite anime are pretty well known, with the majority of them being extremely popular (I love Ghibli films). But I do have some favorites that aren't very well known.

Beast Player Erin is a fairly recent addition to my favorites list. This show is a bit slow moving, but I find it unique as it follows the main character Erin from age 10, to age 14 to age 18. Most shows don't show a character's progression like that, so I was drawn in. BPE has a fantasy setting but delves into the social problems and politics of the world. Erin's mother is a People of the Mist, a race of nomads with green hair and eyes. Because of this, both Erin and her mother are distrusted by the people of the village they live in. This show isn't for everyone, but I really liked the way it foreshadowed the secrets about the People of the Mist and the secrets behind taking care of the Touda (giant lizard creatures used for battle).

Short, not-popular anime:
Tokyo Marble Chocolate is only 2 episodes long, but I really love it. It is a sweet tale of romance about a boy and a girl that have trouble with relationships, but truly love each other. What makes this unique is that it shows the same events of the day, once from the perspective of the girl and the second time from the perspective of the boy. I thought that might get repetitive and boring but it didn't. It was funny and sweet.

With this show, I think many have heard of it because the manga is by the famous group CLAMP. I never hear anyone talk about the anime though. Clover is just 7 mins long, but it captivated me. Through the entire thing, a haunting song is sung which reflects the main character's, the Clover's, feelings wonderfully. This is another 'not for everyone' show though. It doesn't explain much, you kinda just have to go with it, and the ending is largely up to interpretation.

Gregory Horror Show, the only reason why no one watches it because the art style doesn't look like the traditional anime.

You're welcome, anytime. If you're interested, the streaming site Crunchyroll is showing Erin for free.

Cool coincidence, Chobits is also by CLAMP, the same people who did Clover. It is quite well known, but a great series to get a person into anime. It was the first manga I ever read.

I think maybe Inukami!, can be ecchi in all of the normally wrong ways, but can be oh so right. Expect elephants. First couple episodes are always a challenge for people new to it, but get past that you have either past the hard bit, or on your way to being desensitized. Being grossed out and laughing makes it a rather ball, but can be jarring.

It's probaly not that obscure, but I don't hear a lot of people talk about Planetes. That is one of my all-time favorites.

So basically, a better title for this thread might be "favorite hidden gems". But hidden gems are just what I like! I'm just gonna pull up my list on MAL and pick things I rated highly that have about 5000 or less ratings.

So first, what I'm currently watching these days is Hokuto no Ken, or Fist of the North Star. I know a lot of people are probably going to tell me this isn't overlooked, but outside of Japan, it kinda is. Here, it's kinda known as "that shonen that lots of comedy anime parody" (No, really, look), odds are people know more about the series parodying HnK than the actual show itself, there's Excel Saga, GTO, School Rumble, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, Lucky Star, Urusei Yatsura, Gintama, Baka and Test, Project A-Ko, Air Gear, My Bride is a Mermaid, Cromartie High School (take a look at Freddie's horse, at the very least, Cro High is far more subtle about it that any other parody moment I've seen), most of these shows have been out in America longer and have far more popularity (Discotek only recently put out Fist of the North Star on DVD, before that, only the first 36 episodes and the movie had been available stateside, and some spinoff stuff). I think as a result, HnK is know as something to get parodied, rather than it's own show (at least outside of Japan), but it's actually a damn good shonen in its own right. Ok, so maybe the animation isn't exactly good, even for its time (except for that one ep with the random budget bump), but it's addictive and exciting to watch, which is exactly what I want from a shonen.

Actually, Hokuto no Ken reminds me a bit of Astro Boy in that since it is so big in Japan and gets bled over into other anime/manga as homages, everyone thinks they know what it's about so they don't actually bother to watch it, as the 2003 series of Astro Boy was really quite good too and deserves more love. Ok, a lot of the really episodic stuff could be hit or miss, but there was this great mid-finale and finale that were easily among the best I think I've ever seen on the 2003 series. 1980 series was solid too (except for the terrible dub because it seems like most 1980s dubs were just "put English there, they'll listen" and did no quality control whatsoever, but the DVDs have the sub). There's clearly a dedicated base of Osamu Tezuka fans like me who have probably seen all the anime and read the manga (I've done 3 of the 4, haven't seen the black and white one), but I feel like a lot of people think it's just stereotypical super robot stuff when it's so much more than that. You gotta remember, this is Osamu Tezuka here, people who haven't actually read or seen anything by him might not realize that he didn't just create entertaining stories, he put lots of morally ambiguous questions and themes in his works that were timeless, it's why the man's work is still as relevant today as it was in his day (ok, some manga come off as a tad sexist/racist these days, though he didn't generally seem to glorify it). So do yourself a favor and check out the 2003 Astro series.

For some more "everyone knows of it but not as many have actually sat down and watched it" (once again outside of Japan), there's Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Like Hokuto no Ken, it's 110 eps (1 more than HnK), but while HnK is shonen, and you can thus turn your brain off for a bit, LoGH is a space opera epic so you can't really half pass out during it, which probably makes it look more intimidating. But I found it even more addictive than I'm currently finding Hokuto no Ken, if you like the space opera genre, or once you get into it, I found it impossible to stop. The sort of "hmm, I could eat food, but there is LoGH to be watched....ok, I can starve" reaction. But this show is probably most known for its fanbase, which can frankly be more over the top than Inuyasha or Naruto's fanbases at times. I'm guessing most of the old fogies around here have seen it, it is a classic on the fansub circuit (because any hopes of having this come over have been absolutely smashed into the ground for years on end), but by newer fans, it's overlooked.

One more cel animated suggestion before I get into newer stuff, my very favorite comedy anime Sexy Commando. Cromartie High School was almost certainly a spiritual successor to Sexy Commando's bizarre brand of absolute insanity and stupidity. And I love every damn minute of both series! I find good comedies hard to make as if they're made poorly, they will be filled with lots of pop culture references and die out within years. Which is why the very existence of Dr. Strangelove and Airplane! delight me to no end. Dr. Strangelove is, what, almost 50 now and it still blows modern comedies out of the water? So yeah, deadpan humor and weirdness are totally my things and Sex Commando is one of the best anime at doing just that. It's about this one really weird guy at school, Masaru Hananakajima, who can't seem to act normal for even one second who randomly took 3 months off from school to go train at some martial art called the sexy commando. I can't possibly spoil what the actual martial art entails, but for a comedy about martials arts and high school, it has a very limited amount of both of them in favor of seeing the weirdness of the characters bounce off each other (very similar to Cro High, all Cro fans needs to go watch SC). No one is as weird as Masaru, but they all have their quirks.

Ok, so modern favorites. I'l start with Fantastic Children, because it's not too late to get that from Bandai, people! It was probably overlooked due to character designs, but it is a rather mature scifi drama. It's most like Please Save My Earth, but since this isn't the manga boards, most of the people reading will be unaware (and if you've seen the OVA, this is a similar concept but with an actual ending) Don't let the childish character designs fool you or you'll miss out on a great story. Also, this anime has to be vying for the award for worst dub since the 90s OVA era, as it was outsourced. Just, go with the sub for maximum enjoyment.

Actually, this might be a bit of a reverse as Oban Star-Racers did quite well in Europe, as it was a co production between France and Japan. In America though? It only did so so despite airing on Jetix (clearly the problem is that Jetix Europe is more badass). But it's a great show that knows how to balance episodic races that are actually exciting to watch with plot and character development. Oh and 2D and 3D animation, I didn't know so much of it was CGI until I watched the extra features on the disc. Someone on here bragged about his DVD purchase of it or something so I take every chance I can to brag about this show to others. It's a dub only set, but I got the whole thing for around $30 (also, French would be the original language here anyway, not Japanese)

And finally, gonna go with Tetsujin 28-2004. Probably one of the worst selling series for poor Geneon, much like Fantastic Children, it has old timey childish character designs hiding a much darker story. Though perhaps being based on what was known as Gigantor in the US made people not care, but the 2004 Tetsujin series was fantastic, it's a shame it's so unknown. Yet somehow it got an artbox and CDs, not sure if that's because it was what Geneon was doing at the time with everything or what though.

Most people have definitely heard of my favorite anime TV series but I'm sure that my favorite anime OVA is underground as underground can be.
It's called Princess Rouge: Legend of the Last Labyrinth. It's like if Oh My Goddess actually had an interesting premise with an actually interesting heroine. hahah *shot*

Adding to that, my favorite harm series is Sumomomo momomo and my favorite horror/vampire series is Nightwalker.

Do you mean Miracle Girls? I remember watching it on good old fansub tapes when I was a teenager and I think it used to be featured in a manga magazine (Animerica maybe?) years ago as I also remember reading it. It was a pretty cute series.

On this forum there is no anime that no one else knows about. Wink

For favorite anime with a tiny viewership I always go to my only R2 purchase, Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space. An art film that partially adapts a Thomas Pynchon novel and is to very few person's taste but I rate it a masterpiece and hold out absolutely foolish hope for continuation.

I mean. if you think these guys who continuously ask for a 3rd season of Rosario x Vampire are deluded, turn that up by ten and you have the likelihood of a Tamala movie sequel.

But quite well known in fandom, isn't it? And since this thread is about titles that need more love I'd offer some stuff from Tezuka

In The Beginning: The Bible Stories- special request from Vatican- animated re-telling of Old Testament. Tezuka willed to do it, but he didn't manage to complete work. Finished by Osamu Dezaki, one of the most touching and accurate versions that managed to tell everything while staying kid-friendly. Well European kid- it had Italian, German and Spanish version. Good luck with finding English dub.

Senya Ichiya Monogatari- Tezuka's version of 1001 nights. Drunk and drugged kid of the 60s, one of the very few anime targeted entirely to adult. Lots of nudity but no vulgarity, violence without gore, twisted story with lots of sense.

Noein - Great sci-fi series involving inter-dimensional travel and parallel universes with a coming-of-age story. Compelling characters, interesting villains and at-times really experimental animation. I also think the dub is very good. I love Noein but it's already come and gone and hardly set the world on fire.

Also, classicalzawa speaks nothing but the truth in regards to Fantastic Children. Talk about a show that lives up to it's title!
