Sister Mary Francis!!!!
How on earth did they scrape up a cool hundred million dollars?!? I mean, that's about right where I'd put it for a project of this nature to work out easily.
So, either ADV is knee-deep in debt to the Yakuza now, or they're far more successful as a company than I ever thought.

I'm guessing the funding's split between the distributor, WETA, and ADV.

I get this weird feeling that they're talking about the projected budget, should this movie actually get made. Either that, or they have an interested studio and/or financial backer that they haven't announced yet.

Securing financing is one of the first things that is done when planning a movie. Undoubtedly they have a major Hollywood studio backing them.

I also suspect this is a projected budget, rather than the amount of money they've got. Often filmmakers get an appealing plan together and make as much noise about it as they can in order to attract investors. I suspect that's what's happening here. Here's hoping!

Sounds like great news to me. This movie will blow the anime version of the ending out of the water budget wise.

Let's not forget, though, that there is no relation between $ spent and movie quality. None whatsoever. None.
And I doubt that the movie can really hope to surpass EoE in any meaningful fashion, excepting maybe ticket sales.

Let me just backpedal a bit: more money can provide the means for a better movie, but since there are a lot of great low-budget movies and crummy expensive movies, money doesn't gurantee quality.

Damn right, look at all the Hollywood flicks that costed major bucks and sucked bad...
i.e. Waterworld, A.I., and XXX

If such a budget implies hardcore mainstream backing of some sort, I truly hope the artistic integtrity is not compromised by the influential powers of an industry which has consistently proven to be fearful of experimental styles. Alot of people hate EVA, but those who love it (as I do) have come to see it as something as epic and monumental as Kubrick's 2001. If the money is there, I'm all the happier. Afterall, they will NEED IT. Just makes me more paranoid is all... The anime alone worked pretty hard to push the envelope.

I still don't see the reason why anime needs to be live-action.

I hope Shinji says "Come get some" and kickboxes an Angel into submission (in bullet time.)
I hope Asuka says "Nigga please!"
I hope Rei has even more gratuitious nudity than in the series.
I hope Dr. Ikari says "Come get some" and kickboxes an angel into submission (in bullet time.)
I hope Ritsuko does a sideways jump while shooting two pistols at somebody.
I hope they have the Human Instrumentality Project, a Rover melts, and Avon shoots Blake , the Valyard reveals that he's the Doctor's final incarnation and Shinji rips Number One's mask off to reveal his own face underneath.
Otherwise Eva has Jumped the Shark.

Gatsu, thanks for keeping us informed.
