Do you think that Adult Swim's anime block is turning people on or off anime. I know alot of people who i told, "Watch Anime on Adult Swim," and then they tell me that it was retarded and that anime is no better than any stupid pokemon (which I go on to tell them why Pokemon isn't that stupid). So, what do you thinK? Anime catgrin

Your friends are obviously close-minded people who belive all anime is Pokemon and porn. Don't bother with them. Adult Swim is doing a great job with anime. Without it, we wouldn't have Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Fullmetal Alchemist, or Ghost in the Shell on TV, or at least not in their uncut forms. Toonami has gotten better over now, what with the addition of Naruto and now IGPX. If your friends think Cartoon Network only shows Pokemon, they don't know how wrong they are.

It's not Adult Swim. Your friends just appear to dislike anime. Some people like things, other people like other things. If they don't like it, I wouldn't try to convince them.

I think thats not a very smart assumption because it's like saying people who don't like football don't like it because ESPN shows it on Sunday Night. If you don't like anime then you just don't. For example I hate Soap Operas. Is it because CBS, ABC, and KCRA have them on their schedule? No, it's because I just don't.

I think [as] is doing an awesome job and they are saving me a lot of money, I purchased the first two volumes of Samurai Champloo and when they began to air it I stopped, and are introducing us to anime we probably would have never picked up at the store, for me that would be Inuyasha, Paranoia Agent, Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex, and many others.

What you gotta remember is that in order to be "turned off" by anime you first have to be "turned on" ..... Laughing Stop being a perv you know what I mean. Those people who think all anime is Pokemon and Porn have probably never seen any anime to begin with. They are not "turned on" before entering [as] and don't get "turned off" after watching it. And if [as] anime turns you on, you have issues.

If these people can't see the good points of CB, GITS:SAC, FLCL, and the rest, then they will not like any anime whatsoever. They obviously aren't interested, don't waste your time trying to convince them

As far as Adult Swim turning people on to anime, I have met a lot of people who discovered anime through AS titles like Cowboy Bebop and Inuyasha. I support Adult Swim because it gives people who have never watched anime an oppurtunity to get into it, even if it means they only watch mainstream titles.

[AS] certainley doesn't turn me off, and probably doesn't to anyone who actually watches it. maybe your friends, as many others have said, just don't like it and just told you they had watched it, even if they didn't just to say that they don't. or they could have watched it and saw something they liked, but thought that if they said they liked it they would be sort of an outcast from the main cliq if you will.

The only thing that turns me off on Adult Swim is that crap they now show on Sunday night. WTF is that 12oz. mouse supposed to be and don't get me started on Tom goes to the Mayor.

I'll warn you beforehand that I have my bias, since most of the anime I watch comes from taping [AS]. I certainly think it's a good block to watch. They do play somewhat of a variety, even if most are action anime. I think I would have completely swept by a title such as Fullmetal Alchemist if I hadn't seen it on TV and decided to pick up the manga. I also would never have been able to buy so many series, especially Ghost in the Shell: SAC, given that I haven't a lot of spare money. I think [AS] is a great way for anyone with calble to get his/her anime fix, and shows I don't like I don't tape. No one's making me watch certain shows.

In the case of anime most people decide not to like it before ever actually watching it. So even if you get them to watch some the chances are they've already made up their minds and watching won't change it. Much like what many anime purists do with dubs and R1 releases.

I think you should watch [adult swim], and think for yourself. I don't know if you're new to watching Japanese anime or you live in the basement surrounded by posters and figurines of anime crap, but in my opinion one of the worst things a person can do regarding anime is ask another person "what do you think of (blank)?" and completely go by that answer. The answers will vary, the person may be biased against what you've asking about and try to mislead you, and eventually you'll get a "OMG U WATCH [AS] you newB" and be pissed. I'd say watch whatever you want, and viva la animation.

NOTE: Notice I said what I said about listening to other's opinion and never gave my own about [as].

Let's be honest, having an "outsider" watch FLCL is like shoving a novice swimmer into the deep end, despite the very good dubbing that it boasts. I personally don't watch Adult Swim, because I own or have already seen all of the shows that it offers. But, in terms of exposing people to the medium, and building more support/revenue for the industry among "mainstream" people, I think it's fantastic, even if there are edits and the programming lacks shoujo/romance/cute shows.

Crying or Very sad I CAN'T SWIM!

But I agree you can't convert someone when showing the episode 6 of Paranoia Agent or some filler episode from Inuyasha, or any episode for that matter. Try showing them something from your collection that they can fully comprehend. I found that to be the best way to get people to watch a new series. Don't pick a series that starts off slow. I showed Gunslinger Girl to a friend and she absolutely loved it.

Yeah, in the comprehension department, some AS shows aren't that great. FMA is by all means a great show, but if you just randomly watch episode 36 or something, you won't understand it. Many past Cartoon Network/Adult Swim shows have met the good standards of being action-oriented, comprehensible, not too "anime-esque" (referring to crazy reaction shots, cuts to manga style, chibi/super-deformed characters), and not too "Japanese" in culture or setting. Examples would be Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, and Wolf's Rain, though I haven't seen WR to judge fully. And not that having "Japanese" elements in a show is bad, but it's another obstacle for people who are acclimating themselves to the art and storytelling styles. Of course, Samurai Champloo would be the exception.
