I'll add here that Blockbuster's main dude is in with the Focus on the Family and the Religious Right group out of Tennesse. This isn't made up stuff I couldn't be that rude and crazy. Otherwise not to befuddle the hard workers of Blockbuster and the such but Blockbuster's karma has run out. I'd like to see the return of the Mom and Pop joints personally. Hollywood Video hopefully is next.

There seems to be a lot of people who think that all Blockbusters will be closing. This is not true. Most likely some of the poorly performing locations will close, but most will stay open.
By comparison, once upon a time Best Buy filed for bankruptcy. Some locations closed, but not all. They changed their gameplan and are now a strong company. It is very possible for Blockbuster to do the same. So, all is not lost.....yet.

I usually go to Hollywood video to rent my movies because you can keep them for 5 days, even the new releases. But their anime selection is horrible. I guess I'll try Blockbusters next time.

While it is useless without proof if we really wanted to know we can always go find out...If you want Abarenbo I'll go look for the information to see if he's telling the truth. So you want me to go look for it? Unless Psohrb has the proof on him he can just post it up.

No, Blockbuster wasn't a factor in Canada until about 1995. Before that, "Mom & Pop" were wholly responsible for their own suckiness. At least the ones in my (old) area. I was damn happy when the big corporate guy came along and put most of those crapholes out of business with their incredible number of copies of each title and their "two-night rentals" where you didn't have to get a film back by some ridiculous time like 7 p.m. the following day and their relatively reasonable late fees. I don't rent porn, so there really was no downside to Blockbuster.

I kinda feel like singing, "Ding, Dong, the Witch is Dead!"
Seriously, how many little video shops did they put out of business? I used to get a great selection of anime at those little ones way before Blockbuster had much of anything.
This news gives me a sense of justice being dealt.

All big business take away the small competition...Just a fact of life now a days. It's a sad thing though I agree when your favorite small store closes down but that's what happens. Isn't much can do about it. If those small store could stick around with there selections I'd be a happy man but they can't and there's not much me or anyone else can do about it.As metallica sings...sad but true.

The independent video shops had much lower prices, too. Two of them near me had more titles, and a much more eclectic selection than Blockbuster ever had. I think everyone was all caught up by the bright lights, and wide aisles of Blockbuster so that they wanted to pay their higher prices. Their then-novel 2-day rental was probably a factor too.
It used to be an excursion to go to Blockbuster. Then Blockbuster went crazy and freaking built a store on every square mile of most major cities so all the masses would get sucked in. It's no wonder they're going out of business. With their current redundancy, they could probably close 75% of their stores and not lose any business.
Right now my biggest concern is the Blockbuster about 1 block from my house and possible affect closing would have on my land value. It is a rather beautiful, unique Blockbuster.

I thought Netflix had about 20 distribution centers...I know there is one in Cleveland, and I get my movies next-day...Netflix works just fine for me and renting anime (I live in Toledo, OH, about 3 hours west of Cleveland).

Hopefully this won't affect the Blockbuster stores in the UK as I'd be concerned because they own a videogame store chain called GameStation which does some good deals on games, machines and accessories plus sell retro stuff and give reasonable prices on stuff you sell to them with the stores being both in various High Streets in various towns and cities plus some being in various bigger branches of Blockbuster Video like my hometown of Runcorn which has a mini-branch of GameStation.

To be fair you can't really blame Blockbuster on the failure of the small shops. Blockbuster is a business and as such they're going to expand locations but at one point they were a small business too. Some succeed, some don't and the rental industry has been fading more and more with each passing year for over a decade as it is. The small shops fail because the business goes elsewhere for one reason or another and ultimately it is those people that cause those shops to fail.
Video rental stores are likely on their way out as the online rental centers like Netflix are far more convenient and certainly cheaper for people that rent more often.

You know, I kinda figured something was going on when I noticed that over three rows of shelves at one location have been bare for the past five to six months.
