Much as I was a fan of Guilty Gear, looks like Guilty Gear XX is getting just as bad with the updated re-releases as Street Fighter II.

Well, to be fair, Accent Core Plus did continue the story where XX left off at. It only went a little bit further, mind you, but Accent Core Plus could be considered a "new entry" in the series, which would make the story line-essential entries like this:
Guilty Gear
Guilty Gear X
Guilty Gear XX (this is where #Reload, Slash, & even the original Accent Core refined off of)
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus
[gap in story that still has to be explained]
Guilty Gear 2
But, yeah, the XX name has been around for way too long now. This game's full title is essentially Guilty Gear XX #Reload Slash Accent Core Plus R.

This comes along with the promise of an HD release to 360/PS3, bringing GG back to some degree of relevancy with online play and simply being on a modern console at all (no more hauling out the PS2 and struggling to wrangle people together to play). So in this case, it's a particularly welcome update.
And of course hopefully help to buoy interest in the franchise, as now with whatever those old rights issues with Sega were out of the way, they can make completely new entries.

I'm a little confused. Is this the version that's getting released on PSN and XBLA?

I've always liked these games, so I'm glad to see they are still around. Still need to play BlazBlu though...

They just don't want to go to Guilty Gear XXX because it'll be awkward.

That's how fighting games work, they don't just pump out sequels all the time, unless they're SNK, and even SNK is starting to take the update route.
Fighting game sequels require a totally new engine and fresh system mechanics, they also take the risk of being really bad games that people don't play since there's a chance they won't be as good as the prequel.
GG will get a sequel when they feel like they have a plan worthy enough to actually take XX's place.
At any rate, can't freakin wait, can't use my PS2 stick anymore so I'll finally be able to practice again. Hopefully in addition to the rebalance they include O.G. mode so we can just play regular GGAC. I think a few people might feel gyped if they couldn't..or maybe they'll do what they did in Slash, oh that'd be awesome!

I might check this out. I absolutely LOVE Blazblue and it would be fun to check it's spiritual predecessor. Speaking of which I'm still eagerly awaiting Blazblue 3.
