Hi, I've just been introdcued to the Anime world. So I was wondering if there are any "basic" shows I should watch to begin with? The genre doesn't really matter, although I don't like gloomy, depressing shows too much.
All tips are welcome Wink thanks

One show that I think is a good one to start off with is Full Metal Panic. It has a good mix of genres so you'll be able to figure out what type of anime you would like to watch in the future. Its also just a good all-around anime, both with plot and characters. I wouldn't call it a "basic" requirement for anime fans to watch it, but it will definatly head you in the right direction.

I understand what you are saying but you shouldn' talk down to other members of the forum whenever they are trying to be helpful to others. Rolling Eyes

Any way start with Chrono Crusade, it's action adventure. The animation is top notch with a fantastic storyline to boot.

If you have a 5.1 setup I would go with Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex. It's science fiction and dark but the production values are excellent and it will give your system a workout.

It feels like 1944 in here.

Forget him...he should of read the rules before posting and you just telling him the rules he broke so he wouldn't do it again.... you have nothing to be sorry about.

Anyways a series I would recommend you to watch is Robotech.
It's an old series so the graphics kind of suck for now a days and the dubbing is pretty bad as well. But the show has exetremely great character development and an overal good stories. This is a mecha show about aliens coming to earth to recover a mysterious ship that landed on earth and the humans used to their own advantage to face off the aliens. Within the show is also a love triangle between characters. It does have some depressing moments but not too many...I think you can handle it. I don't believe it airs on the anime channel anymore so you would have to buy it but don't worry it's one of if not the cheapest dvds ever.

Well here's another list for you to check out. If you don't like depressing anime avoid Grave of the Fireflies.

Forget that. Just wait for the upcoming release of Macross (the first saga of Robotech) in its original, pre-Robotech form (i.e. before it was spliced together with the other 2 series). ADV is currently working on its new English dub (in which the Japanese actress for Minmei will be returning).

Yea you can do that if you want. But I like what Harmony Gold did with macross, southern cross, genesis climber. Becuase it was a such a unique way of using anime that I concider a classic. However, I wouldn't want to see it on another anime. But macross and robotech the macross saga(the first season) are some what similar they just use different scripts basically except Robotech continues on the story with the next two sagas(The masters and New Generation) and soon going to have a robotech chronocules(sorry can't spell) while macross basically ends there and haves a movies on macross and a prequel called marcross zero and another series known as macross 7 though I am unsure where it fits in to the original story (if its a continuation or just a plain alternate universe type thing).

The movies are Macross, Macross II, Macross plus. The macross movie is just the whole show placed into a 2 hour(I think 2 hour) movie. Macross II is another story dealing after Macross with a new enemy, Macross plus is just a side movie/show that's like an alternate universe feel. (I say movie/show because it was original made into 4 parts which you can buy the 4 parts or you can get a movie version edition which puts all the 4 parts into one).

I would personally stick to robotech for its originality and how unique it is. Macross I would also suggest getting because yes it's the very original source for robotech but I still prefer robotech for reasons I already discribed. I also pretty sure Robotech will remain cheaper then Macross. If you have the money buy robotech then whenever macross dubbed version gets out get that if you want. I say whenever because I'm unsure when it'll be out and even if ADV states a time I don't completely trust them on there dates(because of many delays they had on new robotech, protoculture) I don't completely blame ADV for it though I'm sure Harmony Gold is producing most of the trouble.

Try watching some of Miyazaki Hayao's works or other anime produced by Studio Ghibli. Some of them include: Naussica Of The Valley Of The Wind, Spirited Away, The Cat Returns, My Neighbor Totoro, My Neighbors The Yamadas, Princess Mononoke, Laputa: Castle In The Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service and Howl's Moving Castle. Pretty much any anime that comes from Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli is of top quality with good story lines and strong characters.

"Believe it!"

The very first post in the thread "General Anime Questions" contains an excellent list by Cookie. The top 50 Bayesian mentioned by samuraiwalt is another good list.

Please, no more list posts, unless relah gives us more specific personal preference.

Robotech is a "borderline" anime. Many Macross fans don't consider it as anime.

I'd also have to recommend Macross, but if you're going to pick up Robotech too, I recommend watching the Japanese version first and then watch the dub afterwards to compare it to. Macross is the original version and logically it would make sense to watch the original version first. Watching Macross before Robotech will also help introduce you to how some dubbed anime is handled and help give you a feel as to what kind of dubs you'll prefer for when you invest in future anime series. Though personally I'd just wait for ADV's DVD boxset with the new uncut re-dub to be released before you start collecting Macross, unless you don't care about seeing the re-dub, go ahead and buy the existing Macross DVDs, since Animeiego's DVD release was also very good. The Macross DVDs may be more expensive than the Robotech DVDs, but they're very worth it. "You get what you paid for," after all.

Another anime I'd recommend is Cardcaptor Sakura. It puts a unique spin on the magical girl genre of anime, has lots of great likeable characters, gorgeous animation and beautiful music, and even though it's a little episodic at first, there are more plot twists included later on and several interesting sub plots involved too, so it offers more than what your standard magical girl series do. The only reason why I could see you wouldn't like Cardcaptor Sakura is if you don't like uber cute anime, but if you do then this series will be right up your ally and it doesn't have anything angsty in it. And I definetly recommend avoiding Cardcaptors at all cost. Cardcaptor Sakura is best viewed in its original uncut Japanese version, but that's going slightly off-topic.

Anyway, also worth checking out is Pretear. It's another magical girl anime but it's like a cross between Sailor Moon, Snow White, and Cinderella. The series never gets too repeative, Himeno's transformations are very creative, and even though it gets a little angsty in the later episodes, it has a lot of comedy in the early episodes that it all balances itself out. You cannot possibly watch episode four of Pretear and not laugh your head off at least once during it. That's probably one of the funniest anime episodes I've ever seen. If you don't mind a little shounen-ai (gay romance, but it's not porn), then Gravitation is another good series.

Even though it's a romance anime, it has plenty of comedy in it, too. Shuichi is a very amusing anime character and so is his idol, Ryuichi. Gravitation has some of the best vocal songs of any anime, but being about the romance of a rock star, it only makes sense for it to have an awesome soundtrack. Like Pretear, it gets a little angsty towards the end but it's perfectly balanced out by lots of comedy and it's just a classic shounen-ai series. Even though some sexual content is implied, they never really show much beyond Yuki and Shuichi kissing and cuddling, so as long as you don't mind seeing two guys kissing and holding hands and stuff, then Gravitation is a good introduction to shounen-ai.
