Like and Share this photo if you'd like FUNimation Entertainment to try and pick up the rights to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Franchise which will be going up for auction on June 5 before they end up going to Saban (Power Rangers). That opens up the possibility for uncut / unaltered releases on BD/DVD so you can finally have Yu-Gi-Oh / GX / 5D's / ZeXaL box sets in your collection! With enough customer support, even re-dubs like they did with One Piece.

(PS if FUNimation Channel gets it, that also opens up possibilities for ~cosplayer promotions~) If you got twitter, throw some tweets to @FUNimation to ask them to pick up YGO. Very Happy

I can't see video releases happening, much less on Blu-Ray. Funimation had tried this before (back when 4Kids still had rights to the franchise) back in 2004 with the Duel Monsters series and poor sales led uncut video releases to get axed.

Do we really need a new thread every time there is news about this show? there are like 5 separate threads on this.

I doubt Konami would let them release it uncut.

And knowing Funi, they'd probably do something dumb like try to get back all the old VAs for 'nostalgia purposes' like they did with some of their other license rescues, even if it was obvious they were terrible casting choices.

I don't want the series to be edited and cut like 4Kids did. You said Konami will never let them release it uncut, that's like Konami's betrayal.

Konami is just as bad at 4Kids, just look at their treatment of the English version of the card game with the amount of changes.

They were also the ones who mandated to dub names be used in the manga by Viz. First it stated out with just the dub card names and a few dub character names. Then once GX manga hit they used entirely dub names.

Chances are they'd do similar mandate on the DVDs as well.

Only if they get back as many of the original VAs as they can. I know most of them are still voice acting and be contacted, not like they stepped off the face of the Earth.

Different voices just wouldn't be the same. Dan Green will forever be the voice for Yugi and Yami, and hell, it was already dubbed. What's wrong with the original voices? They work wonders.

Well if this is supposed to be an uncut release, then 'everything' just about sums it up.

In my opinion, the voice actors were not the problem behind the dubbing of the series. dan green did a pretty decent performance of Yugi. i have little to say about the voice actors of the show. however, the one thing i have problems with was 4kids' script, which was created out of garbage and didn't resemble the original script at all.

I do agree that KONAMI does have some say in the editing process. However, i believe their role in the editing of the anime is pretty minimal. KONAMI has control on the actual card game. They have control over the editing and the distribution of the trading cards. But the editing of the anime series was handled by the anime's distributor, which in this case was 4kids.

My conclusion: 4kids was the main driving force behind the severe editing practices of the anime and KONAMI had a little influence on it.

There's really two problmes here
a) Will Konami allow them
b) Can they really budget another multi-hundred episode project like this.

Really at this rate, I'd just be fine with them puting the subtitled (and dubbed, I know it's cheezy but it's childhood, no?) version back up on youtube.

Honestly telling Inoue's estate where they can spin on it would probably be infantely easier than having to coral NY Post to do a redub of stuff they already did.

If there's one thing Funimation's good at it's re-dubbing the same show several times over.

Is Yu-Gi-Oh really a big enough draw in 2012 to justify the cost of re-dubbing this show, and without it getting television exposure? I'd just rather they license Milky Holmes already, or something.

Dan Green was awful and didn't fit Yugi or Other Yugi at all. He sounded like a hammy superhero impersonator from a B movie. None of the characters had remotely fitting voices, but that's typical of 4Kids shows.

Subtitled-only seems to be the only possible future for the series, and probably for the best, though Konami does their part of borking that up as much as they can. There's nothing like hearing them say in plain english "Black Magician Girl" and "Blood Vorse" but the subs says "Dark Magician Girl" and "Vorse Raider" due to using the censored names in the subs.

Dubbing long running shows without it being on TV seems risky. Who knows how long One Piece and Fairy Tail will last with Funimation. Keroro already bit the dust from the looks of it, and Shin-chan as well (though I guess that was on TV at one point)
