I dunno. The detail in some of the pumpkins makes me think they were photoshopped...

The X-file consipiracies of GATSU. I think the people at ANN.com can tell the difference between photoshopped and real ones.

Hm......... I hope I'm not coming across as sour grapes, but the winning pumpkin (to my untrained eye) isn't carved, the skin has been peeled away in places, and colored black in others. That's no fun. >:( I wanna see this monster design carved out! But besides that, these all look so fancy! Good job guys!!!

Peeling the skin away in places is carving, though truly, I am a bit iffy feeling about the use of markers. Takes away some of the fun!

Had I known I could use markers, I would have tried a bit more on my pumpking. Though I guess it didn't say they were against the rules anywhere, and its not like there was much "drawing" on it. It was more of shaded in blocks.

Overall though I was really impressed with alot of the other pumpkins though. That paradise kiss one I think is truly awesome. I think I learned this year, if there is a contest agian next year, I'm definately getting a bigger pumpkin, and trying something more elaborate (mine entry this year was Akiha Tohno).

Yeah, but if you look at it, the markers are just used to heighten the contrast on the pumpkin. Everything that's not shaded black is shaved out-- so even without the black, it would've looked amazing. The fact that it looks *exactly* like the manga panels is incredible. Even if they just printed out a scan and stenciled it or something, it still takes a *very* talented to carver to be able to work in the details so smoothly.

I bet if it was just marker on a pumpkin, ANN would've seen right through it, but as it is, it's just there to enhance the carving.

I didn't mean to sound like I was saying the carving on that pumkin was bad. The carving was still amazing.

Though it wasn't only used for contrast. Though rather minor, it appears to my eyes that it was used for the swirly eyes (not quite sure or not on that part) on the left and the hair on the right panel (in both faces). Had it just been for contrast, it would have been better to have taken the picture in a darker room.

Though another question on my mind is are the pumpkins in that paradise kiss picture the fake pumpkins? And again, I'm not trying to degrade the carving, but I'm just wondering how he got the pumpkin to shine so brightly through the skin. No matter how thin I got my pumpkin, theres no way the skinned part would glow like that.

I'd just like to point out a little error in the listing of contestants. The one by Adam Hungerford and the first one from Lindsey Nathaniel are the same pumpkin. I know because ?I was there when Adam carved the pumpkin. Lindsey did do the second one with her name. You can see my foot in the corner of the pic.
