I like Japans taste. So much better then seeing bland FPS #523 topping the charts...

Because Japan's game market isn't innundated with certain genres, nope siree.
Good god, your deification of Japan borders on farcical.

Indeed. Any market where Portal 2 completely bombs deserves all the scrutiny it can get.
As a side note, I can't help but laugh outright at how nobody wants to develop games for the Vita. What was the point in even releasing it?

I was told that the reason for this is because very few in Japan feel the need to replace their PSPs for a Vita which can't play their old games and given how the PSP is extremely popular over there....

It was a tough situation for Sony. PSP is still strong in Japan, yet its dead everywhere else... so do they just ride its success in Japan while giving up on the other territories, or do they release a new system to try to compete again in the handheld business elsewhere?
I think they made the right move, since the other option would be essentially conceding the handheld market in the majority of the world.

Indeed.
Though how long did the PS2 keep selling even after PS3 came out? PSP isn't going to die overnight, give the Vita some time.

I haven't played the 2nd, but if its anything like the first then its just overrated trash that lives off meme power. Portal 1 is quite possibly the most overrated game I have ever played... thats one the Japanese got right, not wrong.

I always feel like Japan's video game sales are a little more varied in terms of genre besides seeing Nintendo games usually in the top 10 in any given week.

The Vita can play a number of PSP games (don't know what percentage of the catalog is backwards compatible). You can either download it from PSN or rebuy it if you already own the PSP version.

I was told that it's only compatible in the sense that you had to re-buy your PSP games in order to download them to play on the Vita. Not sure how true that is, but if so then that is a really dick move.
@Ryan: Overrated in what way? Compared to other games that were released in the same package as 2 bigger games (TF2 & HL2 episode 2)?

You can transfer your UMDs to the Vita for a small fee in Japan.
Sony axed that feature in the US.

As in a game that scored high everywhere, and everyone acted like it was amazing... when in the end it was just a tech demo that made everyone go "LOL CAKE IS A LIE" and people couldn't stop posting pics of the Companion Cube everywhere. It was more of a meme generator than an actual good game.

Portal 2 was a lot worse because they tried to franchise it and take it seriously. The game should have been about 1/3rd the length, since it started dragging once you hit the sewers. It's fun a free, quick game, but it completely fails as a full-priced/retail game. It doesn't have enough substance or variety to warrant that.

In the US that's the case. In Japan, as TItanXL mentioned, you can pay a small fee to download games you already own (so it's cheaper than buying it again).
At least SONY made the thing backwards compatible at least.

@TitanXL:
It's a puzzle game - of course it's going to get repetitive(really, most of them are much worse than Portal). I suppose if you didn't like the characters, I could see how you wouldn't like the game. That said, if life gives you lemons, [insert Cave Johnson rant here].
EDIT: The forum's software doesn't like phrases in angle brackets.

All I can say is look at Pokemon Black/White go. Nearly 5.5 million copies and with Black/White 2 coming out this June (Fall for US) this is going to see even larger numbers
50k is a tad weak if you look at the other games on the chart and how long they've been around. It's probably a good game though seeing as the first one was enjoyable and that the second game is expected to go through material from the novels not yet animated.
