Great review, addressed all the series' strengths and weaknesses and told a lot about the show as well.

Quote: | Heck, you won't even find much space exploration. It's as much a series about having dreams and struggling to fulfill them as it is about the wonder of space and the human urge to explore the unknown. |
So it's about having dreams about the wonder of space and struggling to fulfill the human urge to explore the unknown? That's ... clear? And you won't find much space exploration in NASA either so why expect it here?

Wouldn't that make landings difficult? Oh, you meant he's an astronaut.

Which makes the show sound rather more noble and serious than it actually is. It's a show that puts equal emphasis on the personal, the lofty, and the humorous. |
So you mean it's more like the human end of The Right Stuff than the noble end of The Right Stuff. Or it's just like The Right Stuff.
Carl's easier to take when he's being snarky for absolutely no reason. So I tried to fill, in a small inferior way, the space he left behind.
My actual feelings of the show? I don't know if I'd want to watch it. Not because of the realistic space theme or because of the fraternal theme but simply because this seems to be the sort of thing better done by live action.

^ I'm curious. Why do you think this show would work better as live action and do you mean as a feature length film or a drama series? I've seen the first 4 episodes, and whilst it is a slow moving show, I am enjoying it in animated form, and I pretty much agree with everything the review said.

I am guessing he thinks there is no need for animation .If it was live action it would be just as good.

I'd kinda agree on this, which is why its getting a live action movie this summer. What makes anime good is that it has stuff you can't do in live action... big special effect battles, cute 2d moe girls and other things. Just having some drama without any kind of need for animation seems like a waste... especially if you don't give it any special art style. Thats what saved Usagi drop from being better as a live action film.

I'm not sure you can do Mutta's facial expressions in live-action.

I dunno, something about the "why bother doing realistic animation instead of live-action if you're not going to go crazy?" question just doesn't sit well with me, but I can't put it into words...Maybe it's because I do like a lot of "realistic, plain-drama" anime, like Monster or the recent Kids on the Slope
It feels kind of like asking an artist, "why even bother doing a portrait or a still-life painting? Why don't you just take a photograph instead?!"

Actually Kids on the Slope looks amazing, and by the way if you find a show which has animation that is similar to a portrait (one done by a professional of course) I will give you my sister and you can do whatever you want with her.

That's pretty creepy...and I honestly wouldn't know what to do with a woman if one were given to me anyway.
Moving on, I think there's more then enough room for many different styles, including the more realistic ones.

I agree just that animation in Space Brothers is mediocre and not needed(unlike Kids on Slope).

I watched the live-action movie on opening day and um... The manga and anime are waaaaaaaaaaaay better. I think it has more to do with the execution though since they cut out a lot of scenes and important characters, changed many things, and tried to squish 17 volumes of an ongoing story into 2 hours. Yeah, not gonna work well.
All-in-all, excellent review. The story will get a little more serious later, and I'm sure everyone will be on the edge of their seats for it.

Oh good. Because right now I am getting a little exasperated with Mutta's constant moping about. Yes, we know he is downcast about being a failure of an eldest son, we don't need it hammered into us each and every episode with all the subtlety of a jackhammer. That theme is already so overused it reminds me of an elastic band that was stretched too far and now is just limp and useless.
