Spastic Minnow,
You are allowed to necro a post under certain conditions, the main one being that you add something significant to the thread. Otherwise, they should could auto-lock threads that've been dead for a certain period of time... which they don't.

As early mentioned, Rumiko Takahashi's Maison Ikkoku has a convincing conclusion and happy ending. It takes quite a while to get there, (96 episodes!) but that's part of the charm. |
Maison was the first one that came to mind for me, reading the header, but...I was afraid everyone would give me resentful looks for actually owning a copy of the Viz Box 8 when it was still in print.

Hana Yori Dango or Boys Over Flowers as the English like to misinterpret it lol. Good story, Poor girl in a school full of rich kids. Falls in love and there is a relationship in the making at the end of it. 52 episodes. I recommend the fan subbed version over the dubbed or dvd sub. I own the dvds, but still think the fan sub was way better... If you watch it, I hope you enjoy

This is a really sketchy topic, because the term "happy" is pretty subjective.
Like I personally hate the ending of almost every romance anime out there because I'm a huge childhood friend fan, and they almost never win out in this genre. So I don't get the "happy" ending I want very often.

My personal favorites with endings that made me feel good/had definite romantic endings: the two seasons of Clannad, Shuffle, True Tears, Kanon, Ano Natsu de Matteru, Myself; Yourself, Summer Wars, and Toradora.
Most of those have already been said, but I figured I'd post, too.

Which kinda defeats the purpose to me, as if you don't know if they are getting together in the end, it makes it that much happier when they actually do. |
I agree with you to a certain extent, but I can't bring myself to sit an watch a 25-episode anime, invest a great amount of emotion into the characters, only to have things go to hell in the end. Something like that can turn me into a vegetable for a month. My brother is worse than I am about it, and actually screens the anime we watch beforehand. It takes away the element of surprise, but he says merely scans and forgets everything anyways.
Pretty much, the characters not getting together in the end, dying, or cheating on each other (I just can't bring myself to care about characters, or their romance if one or more is a cheater) are deal breakers for me that constitute a massive waste of my time.
Yes, knowing whether or not these sort of things beforehand takes away the element of surprise, but I never allow myself to know any of the details beforehand, and yet I still find myself surprised every time. I could tell myself "this is a romanctic comedy where they eventually become a couple" and yet Im still yelling at the screen things like "When are you going to stop being stupid about your feelings!?" , or "Just kiss her already dangit!!".

Oh, and to actaully participate in the thread, so far my absolute favorite romance anime is :
Toradora!
It's initial premise isn't that original on the surface . . . it's about two people who are in love with each other's best freinds, decide to help each other, but become very close and start to see sides of each other than no one else sees.
The writing is very well-done. None of the main characters are simply or static, but rather have multi-layered personalities that come out in different ways as the story progresses.
It's a romantic comedy with plenty of hilarious moments, but it's also very dramatic at times with an incredibly moving score to accompany it.
Highly reccoment it.
I also like Oneigei Sensei and Special A, though neither one come close to the level of writing that Toradora does.

Clannad has a happy ending after all the sad things in the anime it had to! The Ouran Manga ended very happily as well. Summer wars also had a very happy ending as well as Ponyo (Does that even count as Romance?)

I'd add Toradora as one of the best, also Ai Yori Aoshi if the anime is as good as the manga, I have yet to see the whole series but the manga was pretty good.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
What kind of ending is it? and what kind of relationships are there with the main character.
I've heard that its a really good anime, but does it have romance in it?
If it does, what kind of romance? |
It's a love - hate relationship but there are signs that the main male and female characters, Kyon and Haruhi, do care for each other there are clues early in the series to this. I think this is really brought out more in the movie The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. We have Kyon feaking out when he thinks Haruhi is gone for good, and later on when he's comatose in the hospital for 3 days, Haruhi stayed in his hospital room until he woke.

BUMP to this very old but appropriate thread.
A lot of time has passed since most of these animes have been listed.
Are there any "new" ones since then that can be added to the list in the last 9 years or so...?

Please provide the name of the show you are referring to. You probably put it in the subject line but that does not show up within a thread.

I clicked my Edit button to check his title, and it just says "RE." I'm no psychic, but I think he totally forgot to put the name at all.

Should we start guessing?
As to the random first user post after having an account for 11 years, that's above that first user post from the new account who forgot their anime title, I'll answer that question about any new titles that would fit the thread title. Though a slight warning first, that being any titles mentioned obviously spoil the show a bit as you know there is a happy ending. So that ruins the will they/won't they suspense.
I'll start with one for now that has been out for a bit now so it's not brand new and currently airing. It happens to be a personal favorite as well. My Love Story. I'll keep this more generalized to avoid many spoilers. It does have some of the typical romance tropes such as characters misunderstanding the intentions of others, over the top physical comedy gags, and some others. It does often switch up the character tropes in terms of the characters displaying the behavior are not the normal ones you would expect to display that behavior within normal romance tropes.
Beyond that most of the characters are actually likeable. I loved Takeo as a MC because he was so different, I felt, from most male MC's in romcoms. He was not your typical MC in terms of looks or attitude. The connection between him and Yamato was enjoyable to watch blossom and I easily found myself rooting for him to finally tell her the truth. Obviously given previous statements there is a happy ending and it felt earned and genuine.
So yea, check out My Love Story.
