Ah, Fire Emblem: Awakening, the game which may make me break down and buy a 3DS. Not that there seem to be current plans to translate it though so I might have time to save up.

I wonder how these game rankjngs work if people were returning e.g. this RE: Operation Raccoon City game within a week. And do most Japanese gamers actually read game magazines/sites for reviews before buying games? Because 51 out of 100 is a pretty low score to me.

The game had A LOT more advertising than here in the States, that's for sure. In the US, ORC sold like crap because I saw little to no advertising.

I daresay it sold like crap a lot more off the back of extremely poor reviews and fan word-of-mouth than it did lack of advertising.
Resi as a franchise just isn't very popular anymore.

I never got around to playing it, but I wonder if it's just the Call of Duty fans who bashed it since Japanese and American shooters tend to be a bit different.

I think it sold almost 600K for the month in the US, so I wouldn't say it sold badly. I think just having the Resident Evil name is selling the title.

I wonder what the low 4gamer score for Ciel Nosurge is about. I've heard good stuff about it and Famitsu gave it a 31/40, which is typical for Gust games.

It was at a 17 before. On the PSN, it's listed with a 4.37/5 ranking. There is a small discussion going on about it in the same article over at siliconera.
I do have say to Conception did pretty well. Maybe Aksys can bring it over here even though the PSP is pretty much dead in the US.

Really? Then home come Resident Evil 4 and 5 sold like gang busters? Hell 4 was a contender game of the year here. Despite what people think about the LA movies each one has done progressively better in theaters here. Afterlife debuted at #1. Then there's the animated movie Degeneration recently which did fairly well in sales if I am not mistaken. So yea, Resident Evil as a franchise is obviously not popular anymore. The reason this game sold like crap is because it is crap. Yes it had little advertising here but it is also just a bad game. Virtually all of the RE offshoot games are. Dead Aim, Outbreak, Survivor and now ORC are all just bad. The actual canon games however all sell pretty well and generally get decent to good reviews. The care and attention that go into the canon games just doesn't seem to carry over to the offshoot games. That is why they generally all do poorly. Regardless the RE franchise is hardly not popular anymore though.
