Well the topic pretty much says it, but I'm actually more curious about America. It doesn't seem like a lot of mecha titles show up here in the states unless it's a Gundam series or brand new. So I was wondering if there was an interest in seeing some other, older mecha shows brought over (possibly in a box-set). Personally a few titles I would like to see are Gear Fighter Dendoh, Tekkaman Blade, and Ideon.

I dont know if this is true.. but it seems like older shows don't seem to attract as much an audience as other shows (same goes with older styled or remade anime)

like i remember hearing cyborg 009 and astroboy not doing well on tv because of that

I'm a little confused about the difference between "super robot" and "real robot" shows. Could anyone explain the difference?

The distinction was originally made when the Super Robot Wars games were made (I'm pretty sure that's the case). Anyhow, real robots are robots like Gundams. They're not incredibly powerful, and have abilities within the scope of human technology. Super robots on the other hand, like the Shin Getter, have abilities that are ridiculously powerful. In terms of the Super Robot Wars games, real robots are not very strong but are very fast and accurate. Super robots have a lot of power and defense but they're not good at dodging and also are not as accurate.

Here are some examples of real vs. super.

Real Robots: Any Gundam (although G units are considered real they have borderline super robot abilities in terms of strength), the robots from Full Metal Panic, Veritechs, the robots from Brain Powered, and Aestivalis' to name a few.

Super Robots: Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Ideon, Zeorymer, Raideen, Combattler V and Voltes V are some good examples.

Do I count as a Market?

And ADV pick up Super Robot Series every so often. Still waiting for something really classic though.

Tell that to Getter Robo & Godmars.

The Mobile Fighters are Supers.

As are some of the Turn A Units.

Oh, and before anybody starts: Evangelions are Super Robots too.

If you want to be really picky about it, spoiler[Evas aren't robots at all].

True, but I was looking to see if people are interested in seeing older robot shows in the form of maybe box set releases. Not a new show or a remake.

I think that the problem in terms of a market for Super Robot Shows in the US and beyond is partly because Super Robot Shows are very nostalgic for one another...

I mean, some of us thrill at, say, Godannar, simply because the theme song has the name of the robot, and you can shout at least one attack name along with the anime! Just like those great really old Super Robot Shows we used to watch!

But on the other hand, a lot of anime fans seem to think that anime can only be mature, and so, a certain amount of Super Robot Shows will be anathema to them...

But on the whole, it's a niche within a niche, so there may not be a market there at all.

I want to see Big Guy And Rusty again. That show was awesome like 6 years ago and I wouldn´t mind watching it again. It´s not anime but it was really funny. Most of my anime watching friends don´t like Giant Robot Anime. Infact, out of ten of us, I´m the only who watches Gundam. Giant Robots are cool when younger but as you grow older, interest change and the market for giant robots die. (COUGH) EVAS are NOT robots (COUGH).

I would say there is (at least for people like me). I am frustrated that I can't get a set of Great Mazinger DVD's in english, and I would love to see one in America (even if its not dubbed, i wouldnt care at all). I would be interested in any classic super robot show, but the price would have to be pretty low to reach the market, not many people would pay a lot for this niche material.

Actually, for the very reason that not many people would buy it, the price would have to be rather high.

When it comes to things like Great Mazinger, not only is it a kid's super robot anime, it's from the 70's. Old anime, sadly, just doesn't do too well over here unless it's nostalgia driven, like Gatchaman (btw voltron box set please). Being new in general helps its chances a great deal, especially thanks to guys like the people at ADV. I was impressed at how quickly Geneon picked up New Getter Robo, only four episodes in. That's encouraging.

It seems like robot anime in general gets a lot of crap from certain fans these days because of the general...stereotypical sci-fi nerdiness of it all. On the other hand, Gundam Seed apparently sold well and fortunately Zeta Gundam is even getting a cheap individual volume release, so it's not all bad. Still, it looks like us folk who like the Skittles colored robots have a ways to go - I sure hope Godannar sells well.

I'm looking forward to this new Gaiking. I wonder if it's something that we could see on Toonami one day?

Unless Gaiking goes all "The Beast" on something I don't see why not.

And could somebody rate the Dancougar VHS release for me? All I need to do is find some way to get NTSC tapes to work with PAL...
