Prefectural Earth Defense Force
Similar to titles of its time e.g. MAPS, Prefectural Earth Defense Force was premiered on 1986-03-21 in limited theaters by Shochiku Film, followed by video (VHS) release just 11 days later on 1986-04-01. Another classic movie/OVA dilemma. The following websites call it a movie: http://homepage2.nifty.com/hyper6/kanren.htm (with very informative detailed info) http://movie.walkerplus.com/mv17489/ http://www.entermeitele.net/roadshow/sakuhin/?id=17614 http://www.weblio.jp/content/県立地球防衛軍 The following websites call it an OVA: http://anison.info/data/program/469.html http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/県立地球防衛軍#OVA To make thing even more complex, there were 3+1 stories in its entirety of 49:30 video, with ~15 minutes each for the first three and ~4 minutes for the last omake. If we change it to a "movie" then there will be no chance to have separate episode titles. I'm thinking about leaving it as an OVA, but lots of comments and remarks have to be added. This would enable the maximum amount of information to be kept in the entry. Thoughts? |

As movies go, 5 Centimeters Per Second is in a similar format; three stories in a single movie, all of which have their own title. Due to being displayed as a movie, we cannot list those other titles.
Towa no Quon is in a similar situation; individual movies (with different tiles, of course), all thrown onto the same page and treated like a single entity. Break Blade is in basically the same situation as Towa no Quon, which is why I brought the issue up, but did not receive a response. It seems like a template merge of movie and anime series needs to be created in order to handle multi-part movies and movie series. |

5cm and other recent titles are quite different from movie/OVA of the 1980s, but I agree with you that some new features might need to be added for those "episodic" movies. |

Prefectural Earth Defense Force feels 100% like an OVA to me. I mean, "movie" is really meant for regular feature films, like the Ghibli movies, the Satoshi Kon movies, etc.
BTW I've been thinking about OAV/OVA... when I originally wrote the Encyclopedia the two terms were equally common; I had to pick one of them and I arbitrarily chose OAV. But now OAV has fallen out of favor and anime fans use OVA almost exclusively... should the Encyclopedia switch? |

I prefer OVA but for no particular reason - I think it was just the first term I came across.

I prefer OVA because it's easier to pronounce.

<frown> "Oh-vee-ay" is easier to pronounce than "oh-ay-vee"? |

My preference is "OVA" (I pronounce all three letters as separate syllables) because it's what I'm most used to, but also it is what I tend to see used in Japanese.

Well, according to a forum search I use OVA at a rate of 3:1, so I guess that's my preference. But it really doesn't matter to me.

I prefer "OVA" simply because I can say it as less syllables than "OAV." Until I started frequenting ANN, I had never seen "OAV" used.
