I recently bought Trigun the complete series on dvd from a game store i live near by.Im a little confused whether its a bootleg or not though. Its got japanese writing on the back and it says 16,000 yen in the bottom left corner,i checked the disc the quality seemed fine but i noticed the disc include spanish subs besides the american and japanese dubs. heres pics of the set.

The pics are a little small, so it's hard to tell. But looking at the last one: if I'm correct in seeing that you have the entire 26-episode series on a mere 3 DVDs, then yes, it's a bootleg. No legit company would ever squeeze that many episodes onto a DVD set. Blu-ray set, sure, but not DVD.

Can't make out anything from those photos (have you linked to the thumbnails?) but just to expand a little more, if someone ever was to put over 8 episodes on a disc they sure as heck wouldn't be the Japanese (unless they wanted to nerf a rental release hard). CDJapan lists only one Trigun box set, which includes English audio but not subtitles of any sort. It's not like you have an earlier OOP release either since the price of that one is 23800 and any earlier release would cost more, not less.

That cover is hilarious, it's full of characters who only appear in one episode and Knives is making a really goofy face.

This is the official version from Funimation http://www.amazon.com/Trigun-The-Complete-Series-Box/dp/B003VQO4WA/

LOL. I thought the same thing. That's the copy that I have which I also bought at Amazon. It's 4 discs in 2 thin pack cases.

EDIT: took away quote since I posted right under it.

100% bootleg.

I used to own the same set back when I was not familiar with bootlegged items. The subs are crap and also disappear randomly, and the dubbed version goes out of sync.

Also, the colors on the inside of the set look washed out. Annnnd the back is written in....Chinese or Japanese....can't tell because of the print being small. But a legit English set would have an English description on the back, plus it should have Geneon/Pioneer or Funimation's logo somewhere on the set.

Go get your money back and trash that thing.

Also, I've never seen a legit release that used that chain-fence-patterned plastic sleeve affair that boots love so much.

1. If you live in North America and can't read Japanese, don't bother buying something with Japanese characters on the jacket and calling itself "import" from either eBay or any small brick'n'mortar store.

2. Targeted at people who learned the title through word of mouth or online discussion fora, bootlegs usually don't bother writing plot summaries or product descriptions on the back side. Legit releases would ALWAYS have descriptions on the back.

3. Sometimes a legal, budget-packaged vintage series could be just $19.99 or even less. In the case of Trigun, you could purchase it from Amazon.com through ANN for just $22.49. Therefore, spending $15 on a bootleg is definitely not a smart choice. Cool

4. Like ailblentyn said, bootlegs love chain-fence-patterned plastic sleeves, so be extremely careful when seeing those.

Last but not least, learn how to use capitalization and punctuation properly.

Japanese, but it could be simply copied from any legit DVD jacket. After all, most -- if not all -- of its potential customers are not capable to read it anyway.

Company logos are also a good thing to look for. They might be wrong or completely absent. If it doesn't say Funimation, the current rights holder, or Pioneer/Geneon the former one than it's a boot.

Yeah usually if you find these 3 disc sets that are super cheap, they are usually bootlegs. I had that boxset too and I'm pretty sure the cover is a copy of a wall scroll image. The seller being from Mainland China is also a big give away that it's a bootleg as well as the "Anime" or "Manga" logos that appear when you start the disc. Most of the dual language sets are lifted or ripped from the official dvds and then compressed onto less disc.

I actually have a bunch of these and I honestly don't feel bad about them. When I first bought them I was still a pretty broke high schooler and college kid. Also I'm Asian and a lot of my media tends to come from the bootleg community. Walk into Asian store that sells movies and most are bootleg copies. So it was pretty normal for me.

I do buy the official versions now and I'm almost done replacing all my Chinese bootlegs with legit copies. Just bought Outlaw Star so I think I only have 3 - 5 series left that I need to switch. And that was like out of.... 15 - 20ish series. If I throw in fansubs it'll probably jump up to 30 - 40ish series. Although I think there are 1 or 2 series I can't replace since they don't sell them anymore.

How can people NOT know when things are bootlegs? All it takes is a little research before buying?

But then again some people buy bootlegs on purpose, so I gues if thats the case it doesn't matter.

But yeah... as others have said. That my dear boy/girl is quite obviously a bootleg.
