I saw this article on Google's new "augmented reality spectacles" and immediately thought of Denno Coil (one of the great unlicensed gems, at least in the US). While I don't think the two are necessarily connected, it's also said that the creator of the cell phone got his inspiration from the communicators in Star Trek.
How do you see the influence of anime potentially affecting scientific development in the west? What practical inventions might happen because they were inspired by a sci-fi anime? (If this has been discussed somewhere else, let me know) |

Yes, it's possible. Although the technology is still under development in recent years the great progress was made.

The biggest problem with prostetics is always gonna be sensitivity. The way FMA dealt with it (rather cheaply, I should say) is to put in some "years of training and adaptation" so Al and co could deal with their new body(parts).
In essence, having a metal arm is akin to having your arm fall to sleep (is that the right expression?). You can move it, but you can't feel it, and even looking at it, you're not going to control it properly. Yeah, it's mostly impossible with current technology. :EDIT: And as my own contribution to the thread, I'll say Planetes. Planetes. |

I think of Dennou Coil every time I see an article about augmented reality. At least people have now stopped going on about Minority Report whenever some new gesture or touch interface is demonstrated.
Having read the Mars novels I was impressed by the detailed orbital elevators in Kiddy Grade. |

And so the use of the brain becomes less and less necessary.

Besides Dennou Coil I recommend watching the first episode of Accel World (currently streaming on Hulu).
Just like Dennou Coil it has some great examples of augmented reality. |
