Also how did they figure out he was doing this? From the way the article was written it appears that they "caught" him by checking his mail. In the US that is illegal and he would walk in court. Not unless they had reason to suspect him of another crime and just stumbled upon his boxes and boxes of Eva doujin ;

Yup. I believe ANN even had coverage of the S.C. judgement. I believe the case was over CGI-created child pornography, but the ruling extended into other areas, such as doujins. IIRC, the Supreme Court basically said that since there were no actual children being used or shown the creation that it was protected free speech. Basically, they said the child porn laws are there to protect the children, not to hurt the people who are into that kind of thing (freaks.) So if a real child isn't involved, no harm, no foul. I don't really care for the vermin who are into that kind of thing, but I do agree with the Supreme Court ruling.
However, the government, since it's won the War on Terror and everything, has been focusing more and more on porn in general. First there was the new law a while ago (everyone referenced to it by its bill number, which I can't remember right now) that required porn sites to have proof of age and consent forms on hand and available to any inquiring parties. Obviously, that doesn't affect drawings too much, but it started what looks to be a new War on Porn. Unfortunatly, I can't find the Slashdot article on it, but within the last four months the FBI either raided or shut down an online adult fiction site (which apparently had a variety of genres, from straight to multiple to kiddie). I've heard no followup, whether or not the site fought back and was closed for good, or any other outcome. If the FBI can get away with going after plain text, it won't be long before they go after hand-drawn images. I fear for 4chan. |

Well if there is one city that can screw up Canada's reputation it sure is Edmonton. I thought the anime is illegal in Canada was a nice touch. I'll tell the guy who runs the manga/comic book store in the middle of the the university to keep a low profile. Oh yeah and the Huge bookstores all over the city, oh yeah and every other comic book store, and who can forget the anime specialty stores.
Although the article in question was exceptionally poorly writen, and the facts with in it were lacking at best. It still doesn't change the fact that, if the guy was looking at child porn he needs help. |

We're not trying to change that fact. We are worried about people that haven't seen anime thinking that anime is child porno. I don't walk into an anime store and come out and an old lady saying you are a sick perverted freak to me. Plus, for people that haven't watched anime yet and could've been interested in it...well....what you think there going to do whence they see anime is child pornography in the news? |

Everytime I see sex offender (though offender= one who breaks the law) I think of conflict of interest...just because whats offensive to one could be agreeable by another. |

I have to admit, if that guy was in my neighborhood, I would like to have him on a sex offender list. I want to know if someone who is into crap is living near me. I agree with the judge's opinion of “Why would anyone want to look at stuff like this?” asked an angry Judge David Tilley. “I don’t think this is the kind of filth that should be available to the public.” In fact, I think the guy should remain on the offender list and serve jail time. Of course I've a much lower opinion of people who are into this stuff than most people since I've worked with children my whole life.
On the other hand, I'm amazed that the writer says anime is illegal in Canada. I don't live in Canada so I don't know the prevelance of anime there, but I would assume Pokemon was big in Canada too and that it was widely known as anime. Mebbe the guy's ossified mind couldn't make the connection. I can imagine in the US that an article like that would cause a crusade from the Bible Belt with imbeciles thinking that Pokemon that gradeschoolers watch is the same as that crap that Canadian was collecting. |

Regarding that, the updated version is twice as long, yet still pretty much makes the same mistakes. |

I don't get it. So what if he reads lolicon manga? So what if he owns pornagraphic doujinshi? Isn't it his privacy to keep what he reads to himself? He isn't harming anyone, he hasn't done anything wrong, except get caught at the wrong place in the wrong time. Grow up Edmonton, there's much more serious stuff out there to worry about than a couple volumes of doujinshi and downloaded hentai anime.

Right now, I'm utterly humiliated to claim Edmonton as my hometown. It's bloody disgraceful how this so-called Journalist made it sound like all anime/manga fans are sick freaks.
Before anyone thinks that we're a bunch of conservative freaks up there, I would like to point out that we have a good thriving commmunity of anime/manga fans in the city. We also have the biggest Anime convention in the prairies and none of us are bizarre deviants that are a "supposed" threat to society. I've lived in Edmonton for 18 years (I'm teaching English in Seoul at the moment) and have watched the anime fan community grow over that time into a group of really cool, educated individuals during that time. It has spread far and wide and we do have tons of stores that sell manga and anime and are proud that people are buying it in droves as they are. Also, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal have done their share to embarass the country in full, so just because some ill-informed idiot wrote a horrible article and some dude with a fetish got caught doesn't mean that we're uneducated hillbilly like morons. |

It is illegal in the USA to open you mail inside the country. US Customs can and does open your mail. Canada is the same. -t |

Okay, whoever wrote that article is a complete dipshit. How is anime illegal in Canada? I mean, they dub it in Vancouver, show it on YTV, and sell it in stores, just like here in America! What kind of moron is this reporter? The dumbass and this even stupider judge seem to think that anime is all porn because this guy had a bunch of loli manga. And what's really stupid about the article is that the reporter thinks that anime is the name of a specific "cartoon". He or she is completely oblivious to the fact that anime is an entire genre of animation that covers various aspects OTHER THAN PORN. And how the hell does loli-manga look like Pokemon and Astro Boy? Once again, the media shows how ignorant and close-minded it is when it comes to anime.
"I live in Child Porn is illegal in Canada Anime no." This is gonna be my new sig at AnimeOnDVD. Last edited by Starwind Amada on Fri Oct 21, 2005 12:19 am; edited 1 time in total |

Even the revised version is still pretty insulting, in my opinion. There was no need to even mention the word "anime" in this article, let alone draw unnecessary and sensationalist comparisons to Astro Boy and Pokemon, and the Edmonton Sun version is much better specifically because it doesn't.
Chris, I'm really glad you wrote that editorial. Just about every angle of this issue repulses me to begin with, so I'm not even sure if I could articulate a response to this article. Some people. |
