I think I still speak for all outside of Japan. We still want the Final Mix games! Hell, I had to import and finish Final Mix+, but I'll still pay for a translated 1 and 2 Final Mix.

Even if they hadn't made the "spin-off" games for the DS, KHIII would have had to wait until after the main KH team (who are supposedly also good at and used to programming on the PS3 system after several years of development and experience) finished FF Versus XIII. To me, the better they are at developing with the system, the better the chances are that we'll get an experience we can liken to our old Kingdom Hearts tastes... as opposed to using a team that is so distanced to the new engine that they have to admit they can't even make proper towns in a certain popular franchise... *ahem*
Besides, the DS games were mostly commissioned by other companies (re:coded not included, since Nomura decided to remake the originally commissioned "Coded" cell-phone game for the DS himself). Nomura just used background stories and such that he had as a secondary resort for this kind of thing (Xion existed before KHII, but the idea didn't come to fruit until 358/2 Days).
As for anyone who wants to complain about there not being a main-series game since KHII, I would like to inform you that KH: Birth By Sleep was Nomura's idea of making a main series game for a system that they could work on at the time (again, the main KH team was busy with FF Versus XIII). He numbers it "0" in the main saga, and anyone who has played it will likely agree that this game felt nearly identical to the console games, including graphics, length, replayability, and the impact of the story on the franchise--not to mention, the impact of the story on our hearts. The gameplay system was somewhat new, but it was so successful and well-praised that the teams have decided they will make it a major player in KHIII, when they start making it. To those unfamiliar or curious about it--it's just as straight-forward as your usual hack-and-slash-like Kingdom Hearts gameplay, but the "command" system allows for more customization of your magic and physical attacks. Not to mention, it was well-balanced between physical attacks and magic, so you could choose to prioritize magic without feeling penalized for it.
Just because it was on the PSP does not automatically make it a "spin-off." Either get a PSP and play it, or pout like everyone else that they couldn't make a game for a system you own. I mean, not everyone who had a PS2 has a PS3 (most people I know can't afford a PS3--in Japan, it has only been catching on as an average-majority game console like the PS2 in the past few years). And sorry, fellow Americans, but the PSP sold well in Japan and was ideal for a main-series franchise game then.
That being said, if we are to believe the trailers and interviews about this game, it has enough content and importance in the story to be likened to that of Chain of Memories or even Birth By Sleep. I really hope it's a good game. Me and my girlfriend are combining our wallets to get a Japanese 3DS (instead of an American 3DS) and the game so we can play it within a month or two of release...

Without all these spin off games we probably wouldn't have known what the HELL was going on in KH3.
