Ten volumes at the most, but perferably under. I've quit collecting long series like Rurouni Kenshin and because their too long and expensive to keep up with.

Short series I already have:

No-Need for Tenchi! (I know it's 12, but it's an exception since I love Tenchi)
The All-New Tenchi Muyo!
Gundam: The Last Outpost
Cowboy Bebop Shooting Stars

Thanks.

go for Tanemura's works; Full Moon wo Sagashite and Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne are both 7 volumes long and coming out in the US (volume 3 of Full Moon should be out soon, and so should KKJ volume 1). they're not completely released in the US so there will be some wait to read them all, but they're wonderful, especially KKJ. I swear, I've never fangirled over a maho shojo manga before KKJ.

Orz...

While I like Tanemura's works, haven't you noticed that Zenitram's choice were all shounen-oriented? Out of the Top 50 list, I'd like to recommend GUNNM (Battle Angel Alita, 9 volumes, completed), Planetes (4 volumes, ongoing), and SaiKano (7 volumes, completed). All three are sci-fi classics with existentialism dilemma: Who am I? What am I? Where should I go next? Et cetera. Not to mention all three have high artistic values. They are more seinen than shounen, however.

Just checked Amazon.co.jp. From what I've learned, the manga finished at vol. 4, and this "vol. 5" is the official guide book (公式ガイドブック) co-released with vol. 4 on 2004-02-23.

Correct me if I'm wrong: looks like the US release has splitted the extra thick vol. 4 (325 pages in Japanese) into two separate volumes.

Tokyo Pop did split up vol. 4 into Vol. 4 part 1 and 2. Into 192 page and 200 page books respectively.

All of Masamune Shirow's works are pretty short. Appleseed is the longest at four volumes. However they are a bit pricy.
