Hmm, now I'm a bit interested in this film even if it's in English adapted.

Oh wow, I wouldn't have thought it'd do THAT well. Or that Ponyo would beat Spirited Away. I mean, Spirited Away was the only one to get a major US film award, right?
I'd also be curious to know what the other 4 top-grossing anime films were, the non-Ghibli ones. |

It has a very good shot at number 3 when all is said and done. I think it'll break 20 million in a few weeks, though it might come short of my hopes of 25 million. |

This is very interesting to hear. Looks like Arrietty is going to be very profitable in US.

This movie was a box office bomb. According to critics:

pokemon 3 had the worst sales.. well that figures you give any story to that series it will bomb but hell it's best out of the first 3 movies. Still this is decent news for anime film lovers.. I really should go see this.. |

You can't really blame Pokemon 3's drop. America is not like Japan where popular animated series can have a theatrical movie every year and be profitable. The 4th and 5th Pokemon movies were also in theaters, but the 4th was a somewhat limited release (not even 500 screens), and the 5th was an even smaller release (with less than 50 I believe).
A box office bomb refers to a film that flops at the box office, as in, makes very little money based on it's budget. Box office bombs can still get good critical reception. For instance, The Powerpuff Girls Movie was a box office bomb, but it still has a "fresh" rating on RottenTomatoes. I'm not sure what Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie's budget was, but it seems like it performed "decently" for an anime film. However, it was a critical flop, which refers to a film that gets mostly terrible reviews (seriously, YGO the Movie has a 5% on RottonTomatoes. It makes the original 5 Pokemon movies' 14% - 22% ratings look fairly decent...). |

I'm not all that surprised that it is doing better than other Ghibli films. It has a much wider release than the others. It was the first time I didn't have to travel 2 hours to see, but the normal 45 minutes to go to my usual mutiplex.

I seen this opening weekend and it is well deserving of the cash its getting.I hope this opens doors for more anime movies to be shown in wider releases over here in the states. And like the comment above me usually these films never are in my area but thankfully this time i only had to drive 30 minutes to the nearest celebration cinema to see it.

This isn't going to open any doors that weren't already open by other high performing anime movies. Disney will continue to put out Ghibli films in thousands of theaters and other anime movies from other distributors will be lucky to get a month long run in a couple or art houses.

15.2 million converts to 1,248,953,484.00 yen. No doubt Ghibli loves seeing that figure

15m sounds nice but 110m is even nicer. The latter is what Arrietty made in Japan alone. I do hope the US release keeps breaking records.

Well, according to Rotten Tomatoes, the film is rated
I also read somewhere that there promotion was a major issue that didn't go as well it hoped. |
