After reading your comment, I went to Right Stuf and checked on the Patlabor Movie 2. I saw there was only 17 left so I decided to add it to my last order on Right Stuf. |

While I currently own a bunch of OVAs, the vast majority of them are unwatched (backlog issues, ya know). However out of the ones I have seen, I enjoyed Night Warriors - Darkstalkers' Revenge a lot. Cool visuals, pretty decent dub. Story was bit kaka, but I dug the over the top characters. Weather Report Girl was definitely the cheesiest of the lot so far, but in a fun way. Dark Myth was meh, but had some decent gory parts. Those three are the only ones I can think of that are somewhat obscure and that stand out in some way for good or ill. Amon Saga was a very forgettable fantasy story; Dragon Half had some chuckles but the character designs bugged me and Submarine 707R was meh, as well. If I do happen to run across some obscure gems, I'll let you know via PM or in the "What are you watching now?" thread. |

Voogie's Angel is one of my favorite 90's OVAs, though I seem to be in a very small minority on that. The last episode has superb animation, and I think it's worth watching just to see that, if you pay attention to that kind of stuff, that is. My Dear Marie is also one I really like, and the dub is surprisingly good considering it's from Monster Island. Demon Fighter Kocho was also OK, I guess. Good for a one night stand.
If you want to watch really bad ones, then may I recommend Virgin Fleet (which I couldn't finish despite it only being three episodes) or Very Private Lesson, which has one of the worst dubs I've ever had the displeasure of hearing? Sorry for jumping in, but I love OVAs, especially older ones. They usually just have a good vibe to them, which makes up for the lack of content most of them suffer from. |

Oh, I should also mention Devil Fighter Yohko, but I'm not sure that one qualifies as obscure. I particularly enjoyed the first episode which was far more ecchi than the others. Episode 4 was a total cheat because it wasn't episode at all, but rather a collection of cheesy J-pop songs strung together with clips from the show and then some really bad live-action music video footage.

I have quite a collection of old OVAs. For over-the-top so-bad-they're-good craziness I recommend BAOH, Black Lion (don't be fooled by it's designation as "volume 1", there is only 1) and Angel Cop. They're all violent and crazy. BAOH was pretty expensive to get ahold of but the other two were not bad (if you don't mind used).
As for ones that are actually good, I would list Elf Princess Rane (funny as hell dubbed or subbed), Shamanic Princess (has a wierd structure where the last 2 episodes are a preques to the first 4; this is getting hard to find) and Shinesman (cute parody of sentai shows, the English dub is funnier than the Japanese version). On a side note, I just got my Patlabor limited edition movie bundle and I am very impressed. Each has a beautiful, sturdy artbox, a whole DVD of extras, a book of storyboards and a book with articles and artwork/photos. I hope everyone who wanted them gets their order. @Blood-: your link takes me to my collection with a blank screen. |

@OldCharlie - that's probably because I listed the link as it appears on my browser, but of course, I'm logged in under my username so I'm probably seeing something that only I can see.

I love old OVAs! They have an surprisingly distinctive feel that I'm a sucker for and they fit nicely into places where a full series might be inconvenient. They were still very much the bread-and-butter of anime when I first became interested in it... during the Clinton administration... so watching one feels like coming home for me.
Weather Report Girl was bizarre and really trashy, but I somehow really enjoyed it. Series-length trash irritates me, but just a few episodes of it can be uncomfortable fun. One of my great nostalgic favorites is Armitage III. This is probably largely because of the time when most of what anime was to me came from The Sci-Fi Channel's Saturday Anime block. They often showed Armitage III: Polymatrix* , which is the four episodes of the OVA cut down, then stitched together with some new animation and rewriting. When I found the original version years later, I quickly came to prefer it, although I do have a some affection for how Kiefer Sutherland turned the compilation into a feature-length advertisement for Ambien.
I got mine yesterday and I'm really pleased with it. It's a beautiful package with great supplemental materials and the price was a phenomenal bargain. I'm glad that I wasted little time when I saw a link to the sale on Zac Bertschy's twitter account on the 17th. *Fun fact: I avoided Armitage III the first few times that I saw it listed in the channel guide because I wanted to see Armitage and Armitage II first... This is one of my favorites too. It was one of the first anime DVDs I ever bought. Another purchase from the early days of my fandom was Phantom Quest Corp which I thought was a lot of fun. If you want some anime-based live action cheese, try the Fist of the North Star movie. It falls squarely in the "so horribly bad it's kind of good" category. If nothing else, it's amusing to read the enraged reviews on Amazon from "true" fans of the anime. |

Ah, OVAs, they can be such fun! Or they can be Eiken or Garzey's Wing, which is an odd mix between "funny" and "torture", but for "so bad it's good", these two and The Art of Fighting are the way to go.
For actually good OVAs, I'd suggest Here is Greenwood (which is a Media Blasters title, btw, so get it asap!), a fun little show about an all boys boarding high school, made before the time when someone suddenly decided all boys high stories should be yaoi or have tons of yaoi overtones (which since seems to have reverted back). The only difference between the manga is that it's 9 volumes long, but since it's episodic, it doesn't matter. Also, Castle of Cagliostro reference included. Please Save My Earth, which is sadly out of print, you are better off going for the manga, which is also out of print, but it's a solid 6 eps of good scifi, adapts 7.75 volumes of manga. Giant Robo, seriously, you can get this for $11 at TRSI, it's one the best looking things to ever come out of the 90s, and it's filled with awesome. Make sure you get the Ginrei Specials just to be a completionist and to see a giant robot get a nose bleed. Golden Boy, I personally loved this and could not stop laughing the entire time (even when I knew I probably shouldn't be), and I know some women find it offensive, but I can't name many anime I've laughed that hard at. Gundam 0080, not to sound like a hipster or anything, but I recommend this if you don't like the more mainstream Gundams. And if you do but don't expect it to be like them. Mahou Tsukai Tai (the first 3 DVDs are the OVA, last 4 are the TV, which takes place afterwards), it's Junichi Sato, that's all you need to know Area 88, ADV presented it as two movies (in the same package though) Otaku no Video, a lot of the anime references are very 80s stuff, but the live action segments are oddly accurate even today (minus VHS tapes), Otakon plays it twice every single year, their first and last anime of the con. Question, can you watch just Megazone 23 parts 1 and 2? Cus I notice them for $3 each on TRSI, but the complete thing (which has a higher minute count, so must have part 3), or do you need part 3 to complete the story? I might have to get Weather Report Girl too, I need some more trash, and I agree with Surrender Artist that I can only take so much trash, in short amounts, trash is awesome! It's why Eiken is so delicious! And vomit inducing! Also, you're not the only one who went "Hmm, Armitage III? I'll check out the first two first" only to discover they don't exist. |

I personally thought that Megazone 23 part 3 was blech (then again, I didn't really care for part 2 either). New main characters with only a few recurring characters from the first two parts (one you don't find out until the end). Still, it had an interesting concept going on... I just felt that the execution was lacking. It takes place many years after the events in part 2 after pretty much all of the original characters are dead, so you get a chance to see how things were changed over time. Some outcomes may be surprising to you.
So, no, it's not necessary. Part 2 had a good enough ending on its own. However, if you like the series, it may be worth a look just to see the additional storyline. I just don't know if it's worth the extra cost. |

Many thanks to everyone for your recommendations. Insofar as they were personal rather than general recommendations, I want to acknowledge them individually.
@Blood- Apart from Devil Fighter Yohko, I haven't seen any of those. Most were vaguely on my to-see list, but I'll move them right up into my actual backlog. Excellent stuff. Strangely, I haven't seen Weather Report Girl though I have seen the live-action movie. They used to play it on Australian TV, and my brother was obsessed with it. @KoH Many thanks! Voogie's Angels is the only one on my backlog there, and I haven't seen the rest either... Except for Virgin Fleet. How could you not enjoy it? The tight plotting. The well-developed characters. A young girl's realistic dilemma... @OCStH I have soft spots all over for Elf Princess Rane, but the others I haven't felt the need to see. (I couldn't tell whether Black Lion would be so-bad-it's-good, or just... bad) But maybe I should! @Surrender Artist It's strange, but I've never got round to the various Armitages while I was watching endless less significant stuff. I think I thought they'd always be there! Duly noted. @MoR I also like Phantom Quest Corp, though I gather many don't. @FaytLein Thanks for the suggestions. Your list is a blend of things I love as dearly as life itself (Gunbuster) or just really enjoyed (Macross Plus, Giant Robo,...), and things that shall be promoted in my to-see list (Fight! Iczer 1). And GoaGaiGar. Really? @classicalzawa Eiken and Golden Boy? I have a child in the house. For shame. You've named some of my faves: Here is Greenwood (What's the Castle of Cagliostro reference? Just got Ga-rei: Zero in the mail. Truth be told, I was looking for the limited edition, and attempted to cancel the order when I thought that I had ordered the standard. But it had already been shipped by the time I tried to reverse it. I was instructed to send it back when it arrived.
Then, I guess there was a massive shipping delay because I still had not received it well past the projected arrival time. Based on this, I filed a claim, and was refunded pre-emptively by the seller. Today, it finally got here. I open it, look at it, and it looks to be a quality artbox. I check up on the internet, and find that it does appear to be the limited edition I was look for. I called Amazon and told them I had changed my mind: that I wanted to keep it, and to bill me retroactively. Of course, I probably could have made off with it free, but I am an honest gent... Sometimes, too honest. In retrospect, though, it really was kinda stupid: when you have to search rather comprehensively for the difference between your standard and limited edition, it's probably an indication that it's not really worth it. Funimation, I think, kinda dropped the ball on this one. But I am happy, nevertheless, having obtained it for a reasonable price. |

I bought the collected edition of all three that ADV released a few years ago when it was somewhat cheaper than it is now, but I haven't watched it yet. I'm prepared to deploy the Mystery Science Theater 3000 theme song as a prophylactic measure against the last part. Part I seems to be well regarded, part II seems to win mixed options, but be interesting nevertheless. Megazone 23 the Third is... well, John Ledford called it one of the worst things ever animated and he produced then English dub for the bloody thing. Evidently its set long after the first two and about about a game called, "Cybergame Hard-on." Most of what I know about it comes from the review in this episode of Anime World Order, which assumes and thus to some extent gives away some knowledge of the first two. (Note to self: Try pick-up line, "wanna play my Cybergame Hard-on, baby?" at next convention I attend*) *Funny how I've never been to a convention |
