The cars are not actually from Mercedes itself, but its corporate sibling at Daimler, smart. To be exact, these are smart fortwo ED's.

In Japan, these cars are being presented under the Mercedes Benz brand, and not under the Smart brand.

That may be true, but why then don't they have the Mercedes star on the cars, rather than the Smart Car emblem?

This is not necessarily the reason why, but for what it is worth, Mercedes Benz only sold 1,214 of these cars in Japan last year.
