Shame the animation didn't pay off. I'll be eagerly awaiting it's release in North America anyway though.

How I wish I could see this film in theaters...! Even if there's some awkward CG, what I've seen of the 2D animation in the trailers looks breathtaking. Plus, that epic score/theme song...

It's probably a certainty someone will pick this up to release in the US, but it probably won't make it to theaters, huh? What a shame...

I'm a big fan of the manga and TV series, but some of the animation in the trailers I saw for the movie did look kind of awkward, which gave me a bad vibe. Still looking forward to seeing this. Hopefully at some point in the future they animate more of the story arcs.. *fingers crossed*

too bad about the visual problems of this, while I hear what is being said, I am still cautiously excited to see this...(and by cautiously excited, I mean leaping inside excited)

Perhaps the off-modeling that was mentioned is why the Figma figure looked a tad off in the face...maybe it was modeled more after something from this...? I hate when characters go off-model, to me this maybe a worse issue than the jarring from 3D to 2D, but since I haven't seen it yet, I guess I wait and see.

If this covers from vol 4 to 6 of the original, this will be stuff that was in the first animated Berserk then?

Yes, this trilogy is adapting the same story arc that the TV anime covered but it will more closely following the manga and obviously have a much higher budget.

Ko's review of the story/writing has me thinking I'll be able to overlook the deficits in the animation. Mileage varies, but it sounds strong enough to carry the film for me, at least. I double-dipped on the Box of War and remastered Complete sets, so yeah, I'm looking forward to this. Oh yes.

I'm not convinced yet that the animation is that bad. It actually looked decent in the clip of the first 10 minutes of the film, which can be found posted online. First 10 minutes:

The 2D animation that I've seen looks pretty good. I'm happy with the style of character design and the crisp art direction.

The 3D animation does look a bit awkward at times, but I kind of liked it at the same time. Unfortunately, it would have been too expensive to use entirely full animation techniques in 2D. The use of 3D CGI avoids budget, time, and animator staff constraints while still allowing for the depiction of epic battles and detailed sword fights (i.e. sword fights are not just a series of simple close ups of each character swinging a sword; you actually see swordplay captured in a long shot). Ultimately, I prefer the use of 3D animation over LAZY LIMITED 2D animation techniques (I hate seeing a cell dragged across a screen). Had I been part of this project I probably would have made the same call.

Disappointing to hear that the CG sucks, but not surprising at all. CG always fails in anime.

What I'm wondering is why everyone's complaining about the CG, and not going through what's essentially the same story. Is there any way it was expanded or improved somehow?

Well, true fans of Berserk will probably be able to overlook the jarring graphics - because they love berserk so much.

However, if you're a newcomer to Berserk, visuals are a major concern because you aren't already a fan. So this movie may not win many converts to the cause.

Gotta say the animation is kinda a deal breaker for me, good to hear they pulled off the story and everything but that 3D CG animation is just way to distracting and awkward.

Watching the first 10 minutes, the CG on the sweeping big battle sequences is fantastic, but if it gets in any way close-up, it starts to fall apart. If Studio 4C (who I generally love) wanted to make a CGI movie, I would not have a problem with that, but their designs lack the high-level detail and smoothness that makes CG look "real," the kind you see in Pixar or the better Dreamwork pictures (I'm thinking How to Train Your Dragon here). This is probably due to a massive lack of budget. I don't know if there was any way to merge the CG for wide battles with traditional animation in closeups without it looking as though the results came from two different movies, but the current version looks rather awkward.

That said, if this comes to where I live, I am watching it. With much embarrassment at the ticket booth, but I will watch it.
