I was starting to get worried that because there was an oversaturation, sales might actually have gone down for companies like TokyoPop, since they liscenced so many titles. But that seems to be a big growth, unless I'm getting mixed up...I don't know how any of that works.

I'd say the anime market is more oversaturated than manga is. A possible reason is that anime DVDs cost more than manga. (About $30 compared to about $10.) Plus, manga is cheaper to produce than a DVD. I dunno, I was just thinking about it.

But regardless, I'm glad manga is growing in popularity. Good job, Tokyopop. Now if they could just release the Rave Master manga faster, I'd be ecstatic....

Wow 40% despite the bunch of titles, not bad. I wonder if the RSOM and OEL's also contributed to that Very Happy

I'm curious as to how much of TokyoPop's 40% growth rate was directly resulted from the sales of Fruits Basket, considering that this manga was among the Top 10 selling GN in the North American market over the last three months:

Top 100 GN for July 2005: Fruits Basket GN 11 ranked #9.

Top 100 GN for June 2005: Fruits Basket GN 10 ranked #3.

Top 100 GN for May 2005: Fruits Basket GN 9 ranked #5.

I wouldn't doubt it. Tokyopop has some huge sellers. (Fruits Basket, DNAngel, and Love Hina, to be specific.)

Still, that would leave the question: If Tokyopop has such a humongous jump, why not Viz? If I recall, the first volume of Fullmetal Alchemist sold extremely well, not to mention newer volumes of Naruto and Rorouni Kenshin. Why 40% vs. 10%? Maybe I'm just missing something here.

Wasn't Viz hte marketleader before? That could explain why they haven't had a large jump since they're already started with so much anyway?

Apparently the reports of the reports of the imminent death of the manga industry were greatly exaggerated......

All those shoujo titles will definatly help the bottom line.

That was just comix snobs getting worked up because The Comics Journal published a speculative article on what could happen to the manga industry. While I certainly wouldn't completely rule Toren Smith's views out (many of them are bound to happen), the industry isn't just going to die. Companys seem to have learned that the "flood" (putting out tons of the same generic crap) doesn't work if no one has heard of the generic crap.
My hope is that we'll see more diversity in the manga market in coming years, and by the looks of things now that's a strong possibility.

But... oversaturation is the result of growth. The numbers are severly lacking in certain areas. They may have sold 40% more comics, But if they also produced more than 40% more, that means it's actually a net loss for them.

I'm sorry, but that news headline is very misleading. 40% growth in the Direct Market (i.e. Comic Book stores) is not a lot. If the headline was in relation to Bookscan, then I'd drop everything and buy stock in TOKYOPOP (if they had American stock), but the comic book market? Pleeeease.

Ah, I sould have read the whole article (I though that the number was a bit high). I think one factor is that more comic fans are buying manga other than Akira and GITS right now.
As for Stueypark's comment, while that is true, I beleive the output of manga companies has somewhat leveled off compared to the massive jump last year.
