This might be a touchy subject to some people and I don't know if there already is a topic on this but I'm wondering about you the anime fans out there if hentai is an art and anime form to you. Or is it just a cheap excuse for animated porn where unrealistic things can be done without limit and fetishes can be done.

Hentai is just a particular category of anime, so as in any other category, you'll find art and you'll find trash.
It's part of the appeal of any type of animation that you can do unrealistic things without limit. As for fetishes, there aren't all that many that can't be done in live action these days. The obvious exception is loli, and that topic has been done to death here. |

Hentai = XXX - nothing but senseless $e><, it all revolves around $e<> Erotic = .....can't seem to think of something that will fit... oh that's right! the original Mizuiro OAV Fan Service = Panty shots? Accidentally seen naked = don't know about this... example is the uncut Midori no Hibi, Golden Boy (can't think of anything else) There are also some manga/anime that contains nudity... ex. 3x3 Eyes, Love Hina, I"S, Video Girl AI... but I don't look at them with desire... I look at them as a form of art, coz if I don't, I'll probably only browse a manga/anime and look at those nude/naked ermm... ok... that's all...i |

Of course. Why wouldn't it be? Now it would vary show to show but it could be argued most things in life have some artistic merit. If the surrealism of everyday life can be captured on canvas and called art, why not the erotic and graphic entwinings of the human body?
Mind you, I'm not buying hentai out the ying-yang here, but I respect it as a genre and compared to most "normal" anime, sometimes there isn't much difference. |

It can be, but often isn't. Some artists really do explore the content and do an artful job of the project, while most just sort of hack together a few dirty scenes with a boilerplate story and call it a day.

Depends on the individual title. Hentai is no more than animated porn when its plot exists solely to link the sex scenes together (e.g. Sex Friends), although even these can still have a very high degree of artistic quality (e.g. Front Innocent).
Other hentai titles do have an actual plot with the sex scenes only being secondary (e.g. the Director's Cut of Kite), although that doesn't necessary ensure that the title has artistic merit. And all hentai is anime, regardless of its quality or whether you consider it porn or not. |

Some of it is art, and some of it's just disturbing. There aren't many that I've seen and liked personally do to the content and themes.

Is it anime? Technically, yes. No matter how much you're against it you can't deny that hentai is anime, its the truth. Now does that mean that hentai is high quality anime that will win the love and respect of anime fans everywhere? HELL no. Just like how regular porn is called movies, hentai might be called an anime but the talent in it will be severley lacking. The difference between porn and hentai is that animation lets people express perversion in brand new ways, based around events that couldn't happen in real life. Prime example is the age-old classic La Blue Girl, I mean seriously the word "Sexcraft" alone draws the line between reality and fantasy.
Hentai fills a role just like porn does but luckily it hasn't become the trademark of the anime community, like porn hasn't become the figurehead of major motion picture industries. People know it exists, but they also know there are legitimate shows out there, that don't revolve around sex. I don't think that a hentai has to trivialize the sex scenes to move into an artisic realm. Sex scenes don't detract from the artistic merit of a show, they do so only if they are completely pointless or crudely done. Sex Friends was not a bad show, in the hentai genre, just as Excel Saga wasn't a bad show, in the comedy genre, although neither would be considered a good show in the drama genre. I don't like the snobbish attitude that only dramas qualify as "artistic" that permeates most film critic circles (such as the Academy). Not all hentai is low quality, a respectable amount of it is quite high quality, if you seek it out. Also, some series hit on story, and some series hit on art, so a series could be judged to be great visually, but not a great work of fiction, or vise-versa. Judge each series on its own merits, some might surprise you. Remember that a significant number of non-hentai tv series actually started out as hentai, such as Comic Party, Shuffle, Kanon, To Heart, and several others. If there was nothing to them in the first place, then how could they make TV shows about them that are essentially the same thing without any of the sex, and still have it be successful? |

Personally I hate hentai mainly cause I have 3 older sisters and a girlfriend and have always been taught my my sisters that porn is bad. But one day my friend, he's a never been kissed never been laid pervert, picked up a copy of a hentai and I decided what the hell its not gonna kill me.
I saw it and was actually enjoying the animation. The way the female human anatomy is depicted while some weird thing is raping the hell out of it was actually pretty cool to see. I mean the animation was decent and consistent which is kinda rare in recent non hentai anime releases. I've never seen another volume cause i really wasnt too drawn to it story wise so in a way I do believe it is art I mean some people make character models who just scream and stand and these guys express themselves with Weird Huge Creatures doing it with helpless human beings. I think its art even though i dont like nudity in my anime. |
