(I've read there is a zero tolerance towards recommendation threads, but from what I understand it's basically geared at topics asking for recommendations, the essence of this topic is not based solely in recommending, yet this is my first post and if I'm infringing on any rules, I apologize deeply and feel free to lock or remove this topic without warning.)
...
Now I’d like to try to do a different kind of review of Steins;Gate, by instead taking root in how anime has followed me all the way through my life, from the age of 14 to the age of 24.
While I, naturally, have seen anime like Sailor Moon airing when I was a kid, the very first anime that I watched consistently and in its whole was the Tenchi Muyo OVAs, which I watched at the age of 14, my next anime would happen at the age of 16, where I watched Neon Genesis Evangelion, it was after this anime that I started appreciating anime as a form of art and expression, and I started watching a lot more anime after that, Hellsing was my third anime, and probably the anime I’ve seen the most times, while I do like the pedal-pumping action of the Hellsing Ultimate take, for me I’ll always value the original TV series more, probably because I’ve just grown up with it, no offense to the OVA.
Now I’m 24, and here’s a short curriculum vitae of the anime I’ve gone through:
I’ve seen everything from the stylish anime that dared to be different like FLCL, Detroit Metal City, Mushishi and Baccano, I’ve seen anime that has a popular following like Dragonball Z, Bleach and Naruto, I’ve seen anime that cemented their position in western culture like Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Spirited Away, I’ve seen anime that came with surprising twists like Eden of the East and Puella Magi Madoka Magica, I’ve occasionally started crying when watching anime like Toradora, Samurai X, Hajime No Ippo and Gai-Rei Zero, I’ve laughed my ass off at anime like Haré & Guu, Nyan Koi and Arakawa Under The Bridge, I’ve seen anime that I related so much to that they felt autobiographical like Bungaku Shouju , and I’ve seen anime that taught me things about being human like Angel Beats!, Clannad, Moribito, Serial Experiments Lain, Cowboy Bebop and too many others to list here, yes, I have also seen Summer Wars, an anime that proves that old people still can kick ass, and I’ve seen Redline, which to me was like Marvel, on steroids, at a racing track.
And here is where the review begins… and ends, for all I have to say about Steins;Gate (the most recent anime I’ve watched) is that it has left something incredibly special inside me that no other anime ever has, and if you haven’t watched it yet, I really recommend it, and I hope it will leave something really special in you too.
So seeing as I first started watching anime when I was 14, and I’m still watching anime on a daily rate:
I’m gonna celebrate my 10th year anniversary of anime for a moment and say: Thank you, anime, for always journeying with me through my life!
Here’s to many more years of pure rock star awesomeness!

Wow, you've watched a lot of anime; definitely more than I have.
I haven't seen steins gate yet but you've certainly piqued my
interest.

That's nice. Good for you.
I still think Steins;Gate is one of the most overrated anime of 2011.

And I respect your opinion, but that's why I ended up saying it at the most basic sense "That it was something special to me", because regardless of who is right or wrong, that's something nobody can ever take away from me.

I like your attitude Sebow. Just because someone doesn't like a
show shouldn't make it any less special to someone who does.

Steins;Gate is excellent. If you are going to break a rule at all to make a recommendation I think it's a worthy anime to break that rule for
In any case, it's the only show that got me wanting to play a visual novel. It's very much worthy of a masterpiece rating and I don't think it's at all over-rated, unless someone makes claims about it that just aren't true.

I really have many great things to say about Steins;Gate, so I'll just say a lot (SPOILER ALERT!):
1) I think it has quite a mature love relationship between Kurisu and Okabe going, I feel I see too many anime where the main romantic interest of the male lead is basically a girl who has a subtle masochistic damsel-in-distress drive, who has to be saved from her torments by the male, I respect Steins;Gate for being an anime that really values the love between Kurisu and Okabe as two equals.
2) Maybe this is just me, but I think a lot of people are undertoning what kind of trust Kurisu actually has in Okabe, the thing is that when he starts undoing the D-mails, he's basically moving back to the original timeline, and for each step he moves back, he moves back to a timeline where Kurisu is less and less likely to believe his time travelling story (whereas the original timeline was one where she was completely dumbfounded with disbelief over it), as such for me every time she says to Okabe "You time leaped, didn't you?" it becomes to me a statement of the increasing trust she places in Okabe, which is a lot, and makes me respect Kurisu as quite a strong character.
3) I have to admit I cried after Okabe and Kurisu kissed and Okabe realised he had to go back to the original timeline where Kurisu gets killed, I actually cried for 1-2 hours over it and I stopped watching the anime during this duration 'cause it was too tough to bear for me, so when Okabe gets that video message from himself in the future, I just started smiling and had a hard time getting my arms down from joy.
4) I feel the anime actually makes some pretty sound guesses on how time travel work: Everything from the butterfly effect (a theory originally based on how an atom at a quantum state can exist as one atom in two different places at once, and how one scientist found if you reverse the electron flow of one of the states, it also reverses the flow of the other), to the Schrodinger's Cat perception based understanding of time (some quantum scientists have basically said that time travel per se is impossible but that it's possible to e.g. return back to a timeline how e.g. Marylin Monroe perceived it back then), where he basically uses this perception-based model to collapse the timeline into one where Kurisu lives because he uses his own blood, and that the perceptual experience of Okabe is basically the same (he still sees Kurisu in a pool of blood, but instead of her actually being killed, it becomes him mistaking it and her later turning out to be alright).
5) I respect Okabe for his heroic qualities: Never giving up on Mayuri when honestly, in that kind of situation, most of us would have, there was even a scene where he charges toward the car that's trying to kill Mayuri, probably with the full understanding that since he's the only one with the Reading:Steiner ability (again time only exists as perceptual experience), he would basically get himself killed and being unable to reverse time to save his own life.
6) I like how it's a circular story: Basically the crazy way Okabe speaks with the other girls (Ruka, Feiris, Moeka) in the beginning of the anime, actually stems from the memories and experiences they have later with him during his time travelling experiences.
7) Finally, Okabe is crazy, yes, absolutely crazy, but he just had that kind of charisma about him that drew me in, I couldn't stop liking him no matter how paranoid or out of order his sense of thinking was, he was just an instantly likeable character.
...Yeah I think I have to stop now, I feel I could write a whole book about this anime to be honest, but I agree with you, to me, it was nothing short of a masterpiece, and in my 10 years of watching anime (and now having an anime collection that spans roughly 144 anime titles, mostly in HD), in my personal opinion: Steins;Gate is the best anime I've seen so far.

I'm somewhat of a long time watcher too, but I just don't have the motivation to clear all the obstacles before it "becomes good", presuming it does at some point.

Well for me it grabbed me the very second it started, and I ended up basically doing a marathon of the whole series with only one noticeable break.
But I know how it feels when you've heard so many accounts of an anime being good, and it just doesn't fetch you, and you kinda feel yourself grinding through it to get to a point where it will take you for a ride.
So maybe it's just not for you, or to your taste, don't sweat it.

The first few episodes of the show I found to be interesting, but up until the section where there is some more serious stuff going on I could see how someone would find it boring if they are very action or drama oriented.
The series is just a kind of minor-mystery to that point and you really aren't sure where it's going at all. There are hints here and there of real problems but those don't add up to significance until about episode 10 or so if I recall.
In any case, I think if you didn't enjoy the first part you probably wouldn't get as much out of the anime as someone like Sebow or myself did you can certainly like the latter parts which have a lot more drama to them than the beginning.
