Ichigo's whole family and their interactions are hilarious. (Althogh his father seems to have some... 'issues' with his daughters at times...)
Anyone who likes shounen should give Bleach a try. In fact, give it a try even if you don't like shonen.

I thought Inuyasha was Dragonball with demons and Naruto was Inuyasha with ninjas. Of course, Inuyasha isn't in Shonen Jump, is it? And where does that put One Piece?
I still say it's a meh show. Of course, that's not to say this meh show has its moments.

Quote: | girly-girl Orihime discovers her power through fashion accessories |
I think this might give a wrong impression of Orihime. She's more like the ditzy girl with big boobs, although, she's a lot smarter than she looks. And those "fashion accessories" are probably more fitting for someone half her age, which fits with her ditzy, somewhat childish, nature.

this is totally nitpicking, but the review makes it seem like chad and inoue already had their powers and ichigo 'just' met them. again it's totally nitpicking and anybody who picks the manga or anime up because of this won't even realize the review was wrong by the time they get to that point in the series. great review though

Ichigo's dad is the best anime dad ever.
Followed closely by Yukino Miyazawa's dad.
I also think the review gave the wrong impression of Orihime. She is ditzy, but she has a lot of depth. Her "fashion accessories" were also a present from her dead brother - which is where she really gets her powers from.
In any case, good review. Does the show justice. So go watch it everyone! now!

Is it me or is it not fair to make a review for an anime that's not licensed yet?

I hate the translation of "Death God," I like the translation of "Soul Reaper" much better.

May sound cooler to you, I find it rather chesey.

The problem is that "Death God" is kind of a loaded term in english; it gives an image of an all powerful being which controls death, which the shinigami in Bleach are not-they're powerful, but they don't control who lives and dies (unless they intentionally kill a person) they just collect souls and deal with hollows. And unlike traditional gods, they are not immortal-they don't age, but they can still be killed like any normal human, or die if they expend all their spirit energy. Soul Reaper is probably the next best term to just saying shinigami.
I don't see much sense in comparing Bleach to Naruto because while they do have a lot in common, that's kind of an arbitrary comparison-they're both shonen action series, and there's dozens of shows out there that have similar trappings. It's a mark of the genre.
If there were any show I'd compare Bleach to, it'd be Yu Yu Hakusho for the similar themes involved. When I first heard about Bleach I thought it sounded like a substandard YYH ripoff, but now that I've seen and read it I realize it's actually an excellent series that has its own unqiue vibe-plus, no tournaments (at least not yet.)

I completely agree.
Also, "soul reaper" or whatever is just a fancy name some subbers and the english manga came up for the translation of "shinigami" which is literally "deathgod".

Hmm, I think Bleach is more like Dragonball Z with swords and dead people, especially in the later parts of the manga. But it's still enjoyable, mainly because it's not just plain shounen action--there's great comedy, and some truly emotional parts, even as early as episode 3, and especially in episode 17 where Rukia calls Ichigo a "dirty human" etc. so that her brother and Renji wouldn't kill him before taking her back to Soul Society--that whole scene has some power behind it.
And sorry to say, but "Death God" is the most accurate way to do it, despite the associations that we have with the term in Western Culture. Check the end of episode 1 where they show Ichigo's basic stats; the kanji are
死 ~ death
and
神 ~ god --the second is the same kanji for the well-known word "kami," which you can pick up from series like Chrno Crusade, Evangelion, Fruits Basket Rune Soldier, and numerous others. Being in a compound word, it experiences what I call "phonetic shift" and becomes "gami" in a process that I don't care to explain here, unless someone -really- wants to know.

Yeah, I've been reading the graphic novels of Bleach. It's such an awesome show, waaay better than that show that starts with "N" and rhymes with "Baruto".
I watched a few eps. fansubbed, so don't worry about it not sticking to the manga. It does, give or take a little filler.
I'm looking forward to the day this series is licensed of the US. (Preferably ADV, Funimation, or Geneon.)
Watch the show, people!
