I just started reading the Azumanga Daioh manga because I like the show so much. So, my question is I was able to figure out that you read each panel from top to bottom. But why is the manga bound backwards, reading from the back to the front? I know this might sound stupid so please forgive me on this.

because in Japan, text is read right to left, up to down as opposed to the US left to right.

So in manga in Japan, the back cover and front are "switched" for us, and everything is read right to left. Just a culture difference, it was kinda strange at first, but i got used to switching it. And believe me, its much better this way than switching it to left to right where the characters will be in like, mirror images of themselves and stuff...

Yeah, many times the art is kinda skewed in the left-right flipped mangas. In Inu-Yasha, many are the character designs are "direction sensitive." For example, one character will wear that weapon over his right hand, or is wounded in the left eye. So when the art is flipped, all of these designs are flipped too. *can't stand seeing Sesshoumaru's fluff on his left shoulder instead of his right* Confused

It didn't sound stupid to me. I sent one of my friends the first volume of Azumanga but she had never read manga before, so of course she started from the end. I did warn her to call me so I could explain how to read it but she read it without knowing how. I had told her it was a comedy so she thought "The End" was like a joke and she started reading the wrong way. Of course, at that point, she was thinking "My God, why was this sent to me?!" I can't even imagine how confusing and odd that book would read backwards. But she figured it out pretty much on her own how to read it and really liked it. We had a good laugh afterwards. I'm getting ready to send her the second volume. No confusion this time.

To me, one of the most glaring aspects was in Lone Wolf and Cub;

spoiler[ the Bell Warden asks Lone Wolf to "cut off the right arms" of his three potential successors; however, everyone uses their left arm.]

Thanks for all of your imput guys. Now I can truly enjoy all 4 volumes that I purchased at one time. That's pretty nutty for me, since I'm an avid reader. And by watching the animation made me enjoy it even more and I understand the cultural references a lot better from reading and watching. It has truly opened a new reading path for me. Thanks Very Happy
