I got all of the new Robotech comics and they were horrible. Tommy Yune is a terrible writer. He's not a "writer," he's an artist and should stick with that. I can only hope Omar Dogan's art is better than the previous artists.
Long Vo's art in "From the Stars" and "Love & War" was bad for Udon standards. I liked the cute anime-ish girls a lot, but the layouts were pretty sad. His simple style worked for the "adventures" style X-Men: Evolution, given the style of the cartoon, but Robotech was based on highly detailed anime. Long Vo's art here made no sense. I mean, he may call his style anime, but his skill and style are far from it. Takeshi Miyazawa's art in "Invasion" was just eye-gouging. Unproportioned people and just overall bad art too. Then I see Miyazawa's art in Mary Jane and wonder, well the hell was this artist on Robotech? The bad proportions are still there, but there's some really good renderings and ideas in there. I guess Marvel Money helps. The writing duties for "Prelude" should have also been given to Udon. Their Street Fighter and Darkstalkers are awesome. Scripting's a bit amateurish but they have unique ideas, good ones, and they make the characters very real. Tommy Yune's and Jay Faerber's characters were all paper cutouts, and the plots were just as paper thin. I read and saw so many lost opportunities, while in SF/DS I am surprised by the opportunities they've taken. I hate to say "What can you expect from Harmony Gold?" but no one makes their decisions for them. That's what happens when you hire a Creative Director who isn't very creative. |

Just a pet-peeve here, but why is Harmony Gold saying that the Sentinels were created by the Waltrip brothers? They should get their facts and timeline right.
It was first written by "Jack McKinney" (co-authored by the team of Brian Daley & James Luceno) as novels and they should be acknowledged as the true creators. As far as I'm concerned, the Waltrip brothers contribution to the saga are simply that of illustrators, adapting the novels into badly drawn comic books. |
