So what manga do you think had not so great art, but a great story which made it worth it.
And what manga do you think had a not so great story, but amazing artwork.

I would say Hunter x Hunter suffered from a huge lack of detail art wise, but the story was just so complex that i kept reading anyway. You could tell alot of effort went into planning the story.

I'm not really sure about a manga with good art/bad story, but what are your opinions?

Although I really like it, I'd have to say One Piece. Some people have said that the art style could be a turn off for others. Luffy for example, used to scare me. It was mainly because of his huge eyes and mouth.

From the titles I've read, these come to mind:

Naruto: It has a great story, and I can clearly tell what's happening despite Kishimoto's art not being the greatest. This, in my opinion, is extremely important. I noticed in Suikoden III, I had trouble telling what was going on and where scenes changed. In Naruto, I don't have to spend any time trying to decipher the pictures. The characters aren't drawn the neatest or with the most details, but the story is fluid and enjoyable.

Alichino: The art is just gorgeous and the details are really intricate, but the story just isn't one of those that makes me really into the plot. The author is skilled at drawing, but the story could move a little more.
I haven't seen HxH yet, but I've heard similar to what bahamut623 said.

Blame!
I mean, I am all for innovative art styles but, no offence, the Blame art seems like it was drawn by a stoned chimp. But the story is so captivating, the all history, the plans of the Blame dungeon. It was all really excellent. But the art is terrible in my oppinion.

I honestly don't see how you can find the art terrible. The amount of detail is impressive, and the sense of design is fantastic for both the enviroments and the characters. It may not be a clear as some other art, but it certainly makes up for it in detail, style and atmosphere. The story, while enjoyable and above averave SciFi, is what's behind the art IMO.
While I wouldn't call her a poor artist by any means, Kiyoko Okazaki's illustrations certainly aren't going to be on anyone's favorite list. Very raw and almost doodley, Okazaki's art is quite diffrent from most conventional manga. I think it fits her subject usually, and it's obvious that she draws this way for a reason, but it still isn't going to win any awards and will probobly turn many people off. Luckly, her writing makes up for it tenfold. A master storyteller, Okazaki's got an amazing talent for characters. They always feel like real people, and she never relies on chiches to sell them (most of her characters aren't terribly nice). River's Edge has got to have the best portrail of youth I've ever seen in manga, with topics like sex and parents amazingly authentic.

I can't believe no one has mentioned GTO yet... great story, pretty ugly art. Every once in a while something looks good (usually the girls), but that's about it.

Boys Over Flowers- the plot and characters have me totally hooked by the drawings are crude and unattractive. It sometimes strikes me funny that a supposedly really beautiful character will enter, but the drawings are ugly. The style has gradually gotten better by vol. 12 (or I've just gotten so used to it)

Trigun.
Most of the art is great, but sometimes I have trouble understanding what is drawn on the page. Sometimes I'll look at a drawing and not be able to figure out what's happening, almost as if Yasuhiro Nightow tried to cram too much into a tiny space. But I like the story and the characters; mainly Knives.

Blame has a very innovated style to it that give it flavor. Perhaps the average manga fan isn't used to it, but I definitely give props to Tsutomu Nihei for his distinctive style.

Beautiful art is really in the eye of the beholder.
Dead End, a nice thriller manga with nice sketchy style art whch many people woudl call ugly, but I think it fit well with the surreal world.

I second the bad art for Hellsing opinion. I'm not on a manga-ka level, but I think I could draw better than the first couple volumes, but thankfully like most manga, the art improves over time.

Blame's artwork is just gorgeous in the sense of detail. I remember just staring at the pages for the longest time when I first started reading it.

on the contrary, i thought the art syle was fantastic, but the story made no damn sense. as it went on, it just got more and more confusing. also the ending sucked.

anyways i'd have to say Battle Royale. the story's way more detailed than the movie, but the character designs are atrocious. it took me a long time to get used to.

I honestly can't understand why people can think Hellsing has poor art. So the characters aren't exacally attractive: it's the style and the detail that matters.

I think this is a good point. Often people judge artwork against the steriotypical manga "style" (which I don't beleive exists). I've heard people say that Iou Kuroda's art sucks (just open a copy of Sexy Voice and Robo to see how good he can be). Same thing with Dead End. Is it attractive? Perhapse not, but that doesn't mean the artist is bad. You don't want the kind of artwork seen in Fruits Basket in something like Dead End.
