I too thought the dub could have been better in some aspects, but it is still pretty good. This was one of my favorite series from 2003, and the end is especially good.
I recommend that everybody get this series. |

Picked it up over the weekend and watched it. It is very good, a definite must-see for any sci-fi fan. Overall well done.

fair review, though what the reviewer doesn't know is that the administrative staff and yuri see character growth over the entire series. Yuri, overall, is not underdeveloped (the one we end up learning the least about, surprisingly enough, is Fee), and is a very tragic hero of sorts (no, this is not a spoiler). But, as this is not seen yet on this disc, you couldn't tell.
Oh, and those 'boggy' moments of the show so far, I liked in that they showed that even in space, the annoyances and little things of life still exist. |

That noise in space thing has ALWAYS bothered me in sci-fi, and I'm so glad that this has quiet space. Everytime i watch star wars, or something else with booming space fights, I always think "it's supposed to be silent!!". I think it would be cool to see a chaotic fight occuring with no noise whatsoever.
This series interests me. I've been thining of picking up the manga. Would you recommend the manga or the anime? |

Both the manga and anime are excellent. The story itself are different. It's really up to you, if you're more of a manga fan, than get the manga because it's cheaper but if you like to see motion, dubbing, music and so on, get the anime. |

The manga was pretty much butchered by Tokyopop, though, and you can tell just by seeing how they spelled the names. At least Bandai is going through the works with presenting an excellent North American release of the anime.

I have yet to see it, but Planetes sounds as good as another series that was not given enough time, the British live-action "Star Cops." As for garbage collectors (or dustmen, for you in the UK) not getting any respect, the last I heard, garbage truck drivers in the US make around $55 per hour. Were I making that kind of money, I would not care what anyone thought.

How so? I'm just wondering, since I'm currently enjoying the manga, and from what I can tell, the names are spelt the way they're pronounced in the anime. Of course, I just started the series, so I may not know what I'm talking about. |

Now when I think about it, I like the manga more. The anime has sub-par dub and weird scripting (I watch the dub) and some of the new character are wacky. Tanabe is an annoying character that wasn't in the manga until volume 2. The story in the manga seem more serious while the anime take a more comedic apprach, but get serious near the end of each episode. The cheif and his assistant are equally annoying and unprofessional. Personally I prefer the original manga, but that's just me. However, I really enjoy the music and nice animation of the anime, I just wish they follow the original manga more closely
Well if you ever been around a garbage truck before, it smell awful.....I mean really bad. They better be getting major paid, because most normal people wouldn't do it. The job might not be that hard but you're always smelling like shit all the time, probably take a bath 2 times a day: before work and after work. Space garabe collecting is different, I'm assuming the danger of dying is more of a risk.
Butcher is a really strong words. It's like you're saying they went out of their way to messed up Planetes. Hachimaki is what Tokyopop used and what bandai used (Hachimaki) Yuri and Fee are still Yuri and Fee, so what exactly are you talking about? Or are you just hating on Tokyopop for some reason? Again, judging from the review alone, it seems like the anime is episodic(meaning, no continuous plot from episode to episode).
Since the manga is kind of short(4 volumes?), does it have a main plotline which is resolved by the end. |

The manga itself is episodic in nature too. I can tell u that there is something like a central plot in the manga spoiler[(a mission to Jupitor and Hachi being alone)]. Some of the earlier phase in the manga were connected too, actually the time passed in the manga from chapter to chapter.
spoiler[The manga itself introduces Tanabe in a different way. She isn't annoying as she is in the anime, her job for joining was actually to replace Hachi when Hachi decide to join the Jupitor Mission to become a hero. (his dad is also on that mission). Tanabe plays a critical role in showing Hachi about compassion and she does so in a touching way. From the first 3 volume I can say Tanabe didn't have those other office lady friends to talk about her worries, and there was no "insurance part" where all these people were trying to sell insurance, there wasn't no half section, control section plotline or annoying. Most of the plotline in the first dvd wasn't in the manga (but some made it and were different). There isn't no Cheng-Shin or other sub-charcarter in the manga (well I haven't' read the 4th volume).] Yuri wasn't even an animal lover in the manga. It's hard to explain all the different things between the manga and anime, but they are different even though they take a similar approach. I say give the manga at least 2 volumes if you enjoy Planetes, it has some good touching moment and highly regarded amanga manga readers |
